2007-12-10 09:00:00 | Hi all Up until yesterday the NZ Herald downloaded just like it should but partway through the day, on reopening the site again, it appeared quite different - a plain blue background with ordinary text and pictures down the left hand side of the screen. Still readable but not easy to navigate and VERY unsatisfactory. A friend checked it out on his computer and it came up as usual - so it must be me Can anyone please, please tell me what has gone wrong - and, more importantly, how I can put it right. My day just doesn't go right without a coffee and news fix as early as possible. Thanks for any help Jay

2007-12-10 09:02:00 | I had the same issue on firefox (latest version) but checked in on FF on one of my virtual pc's (earlier version) and it was ok.......it was like that for about three days. but it's now come right..........weird..... it displayed all that time perfectly in IE

2007-12-10 09:12:00 | Someone else here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) was complaining of the same thing today so you are not alone. Looks like it is the website's problem. | FoxyMX (5) | |
2007-12-10 09:16:00 | I've had it a few times - on the Herald, Trade Me and, I think, this site. Refreshing the page works. My guess it's a time out thing on a (briefly) overloaded server. | Mercury (1316) | |
2007-12-10 09:17:00 | Thanks for the replies. It's nice to know I'm not alone - but I still need my news. I should have said I'm using XP and Fireox, latest update 2.0.0.11 and I see thats causing problems for some users. Still, any bright ideas appreciated, thanks Jay

2007-12-10 09:26:00 | This is whats it's doing (www.neowin.net) And the prob with FF, maybe a caching prob As stated here (www.neowin.net) As it says above, this maybe the cause It happens with every sites and every browser (it's not considered as a bug). The reason is that you set the cache to a maximum size limit (ie : 50 MB) and when it reaches the size limit, it does not download any new files, so all you see is just plain text, no CSS, no pictures, nothing. And the fix maybe, is to change the cache to 0 (its on 50mb), or close FF and clear the cache.

If it fills up, it junks the least used records. The text in bold is bullsh1t. It is simply a partial transfer. The transfer from the site/proxy to your browser ended prematurely for any number of reasons - server ran out of puff usually - and you got a fragment of a page. It is probably related to a busy time of the day. Just refresh - this tell the browser to go get it again. Opera and Firefox will happily fetch only the missing fragment, saving on bandwidth. Dunno about IE, but I suspect it does too. |

2007-12-10 17:19:00 | SEEMS odd that its fixed itself for me now anyway however when it was playing up i could open the site in FF and IE simultaenously and it'd display perfectly in IE but not in FF | drcspy (146) | |
2007-12-10 18:37:00 | Well, whaddya know! You've done it again guys ! I tried both - renewing the screen and clearing the cache and we're up and away, just like we should be. I guess either one of those tricks might have done the job by itself. I won't know that now. Thanks so much for the help and the simple but bright ideas. Now for the coffee! But one thing still puzzles me - why was it just the NZ Herald site that came through that way and not the Telegraph, The Times, etc??? Jay
