619693 2007-12-09 22:38:00 I'm going to be building myself a new PC in the next month or so, just have a couple of questions.

I currently have a Gigabyte 7900GS in my PC - the only DirectX 10 card I could upgrade to is the 8600GTS as it is in my price range.
From what I can tell, the 7900GS is a much better card, except it doesn’t have DX10, the 8600GTS only has 128bit interface and from memory my 7900GS has 320.
Should I just stick with the 7900GS for the time being? Reading on forums, it suggests the 7900gs is better.
On my current PC, which is a 3.4GHz Pentium D, 2GB RAM, Intel 945 Mobo - I can run most games really easily, which I believe is due to the Video Card being pretty decent. I can run Crysis smoothly with everything on medium, and Call of Duty 4 with everything turned up as much as I could.

Does anyone know when the 45nm Core 2 Duo's are due? This year?

With RAM timing, is 4-4-4-12 better than 5-5-5-18?

Here is the setup I'm looking to build -

Thermaltake Matrix Mid Tower Case w/ 430W PSU
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz 6M 1333MHz 45nm
Intel BOXDG33FBC Frostburg ATX G33
2 x 1Gb DDR2-800 Corsair XMS2 with DHX Heatspreaders
WD Raptor 10k 36GB (OS and some Games)
Seagate Barracuda ES 250GB x2 (Data and Backup)
GIGABYTE 7900GS Video
Pioneer SATA DVD-RW
Windows XP Pro

I'm hopefully selling my old PC to my flatmate, but a few parts are coming out of that computer - the drives and video card.

Thanks for any help.

I would get this:
www.pricespy.co.nz

And cut down or out completely some other parts.
Do you really need a new case?
Do you really need new hard drives?

Just upgrade the old PC instead and sell its old parts separate.

Graphics is the single most important component for gaming.

I kind of need to sell my old pc as a full working machine for it to be of any value to my flatmate - otherwise he has to go find and buy parts for it.

That video card looks super cheap for an 8800GT - what do you think about the 8800GTS? Seems to have slightly lower core and mem clocks but more memory and bus speed. Plus there's a place doing them for $374incl GST.

There isn’t really much to cut down on - the disks are coming from my old PC, and I'm leaving a 250GB in it when I sell it.

619697 2007-12-09 23:57:00 8800GT is significantly better than 8800GTS - the 8800GT nearly equals 8800GTX. So it's better to spend about $40 more to get an 8800GT than an 8800GTS. qazwsxokmijn (102)

The new 8800GTS 512 (G92) is actually faster than the new 8800gt. This will be the one to get IMO. Not sure if they are available yet though.

Here's a couple of reviews:

edit: there's a few on pricespy but the price is quite a lot higher than the 8800gt

Well, I was assuming he's thinking of the older GTS....

Yep I thought so :) The GT is still probably the one to get though, due to its price point.
