620311 2007-12-11 11:08:00 I thought I would have a play with Ubuntu on my "spare" PC, and installed version 7.04. All seems to be working, except my monitor displays a maximum resolution of 1024 x 740. I am using a Radeon 9600 graphics card and a Hitachi CML175SX LCD monitor with a native resolution of 1250x1024.

When I check the option to set the resolution under Ubuntu, 1024x740 is the maximum available. I blundered around until I found an option to download a driver for my "unsupported" graphics card. I tried that, but it makes no difference (Linux can make Windows messages look like examples of crystalline clarity!).

I must be missing something obvious, but some advice would be much appreciated.

620312 2007-12-11 11:26:00 Yes I tried Ubuntu 7.10, not that impressed, no drivers for dial-up modem I use as always on any Linux distro I have tried.

Seems rudimentary at first impression, don't think I will be moving from Windows just yet lol, even though that is my ultimate aim.

I am so used to Windows I will probably think this whatever is offered although I wish it wasn't true.

Whew!! Thanks, Myth, I would never have found that by myself. I haven't tried the procedure described yet, I will need to knock back a couple of cans of spinach first.

Windows really isn't that bad when you see the alternatives. :groan:
