620167 2007-12-10 23:58:00 Got a mate who wants to upgrade his current graphics card (nVidia GeForce4 MX440 AGP) so World of Warcraft runs better.

I know you can get FX5200/FX6200 for around ~$70, but would they be an improvement? Or would you have to spend more on a better card to notice an improvement, in which case it may be worthwhile to upgrade the whole machine...

Thanks

620168 2007-12-11 00:03:00 Yeah well.

You would notice a slight increase with the FX5200, but not much.

Probably a 7600GS or GT would be better, and would probably make it playable, but a whole PC upgrade would be better.

Something else to be aware of is often older motherboards do not like newer cards, and possibly the Power Supply won't be big enough.

That a risk you'll have to take. If the motherboard is an ECS or Albatron, or a non-branded manufacturers board (HP, Acer, Compaq, Gateway etc etc) be especially weary, and search forums for other people with similar hardware setups.

620169 2007-12-11 02:53:00 you don't have much choice under $100, stay away from the FX series they perform poorly.

The 6200 is ok as long as you stay away from the TC ( turbo cache ) version, and would be much better than an MX440. ( the 6200 is not an FX )

ATI's 9550 is ok ( slower than the 6200 )

Any 7 series Nvidia card would be a huge improvement if you can stretch the budget.

Any second hands GeForce 4 Ti cards may be too old and may have higher failure rates. My friend bought a 4600 and failed the next day it was bought. Ex-owner had it for 4 or 5 years, and refused to refund it.

620172 2007-12-11 22:38:00 I HAVE to reccomend trademe.

I got my unused and sealed GeForce 7600GT OC for $80 from trademe.

That should run WoW on high since it runs Battlefield 2, Unreal Tournament 3 on max which are much more demanding games.

If $80 is still too much get a 7600GS for $60 from trademe they are about %70 as fast as an 7600GT so WoW will still be brilliant :)

620173 2007-12-13 04:03:00 Sadly, the FX5200 range has similar results as the MX4xxx range in tests. I play a bit of WoW myself and have been using a Geforce MX4000 fine on a 17" LCD. I am currently upgrading to a new graphics card due to getting a new monitor (a 20" wide screen viewsonic LCD) and my Nvidia Geforce mx4000 cant cope with Frame rate in High res. I am settling for the Nvidia Geforce 6200 AGP which gives much better preformance than the MX 4(xxx) range or the later FX 5(xxx) range. Still cheap (around $80) and still able to use AGP and low profile if you can get bracket unlike most other cards which require the new PCI-X slot. Reinhardt (13133)
