620652 2007-12-13 07:30:00 Is there surround sound music?

*Ok, just found some examples on the microsoft website. Sounds mint with proper surround sound. Obviously I can't just 'get all the music to play out all speakers' and have it sound ok.

the sound coming from the rear speakers for music, if the track is recorded for 5.1, will only be ambient, and not very bassy, as most of the sound is going to come from the front (think of a a concert -the band is in front of you.).

On the other hand, if it sound is recorded for a game or a movie, you should get better directional sound movement, as the source of the sound is constantly moving from speaker to speaker, i.e you will usually get more from the rear speakers. In saying this, with a small 5.1 system, most of the sound coming from the rear speakers won't be particularly loud.

620654 2007-12-13 21:16:00 I'm not familiar with that speaker set, but does it use RCA plugs or 2 wires as the speaker connection?

Sometimes the sound can sound strange if the wires have been inserted with the wrong polarity (black wire has been inserted into red slot, red into black).

Also try plugging the rear speakers into the front outputs and the front speakers into the rear (if it can be configured like that). Then you will be able to tell whether it is the speakers, the sound, or something else.

When playing music, the rear speakers should play exactly the same signal as the front speakrs (assuming you haven't enabled any fancy processing for surround sound effects etc).

So I thought. But they either don't play at all, or play really badly, sound staticy, and don't even play half the stuff anyway.

They are all plugged in and everything afaik.

A friend has send me a tool to convert non-surround mp3s to 5.1 mp3s, so ill see if that helps

I don't think that's the case with 5.1 sound processing? It's directional sound so why would it play at the same level through the rear speakers?

I'm no expert but that is my understanding.

620657 2007-12-15 01:04:00 Ach, I still can't do it. I don't really care about directional sound, just want decent sound coming out all speakers mejobloggs (264)

Then you should have bought a 2.1 sound system. You need to read up on how 5.1 sound works.

620659 2007-12-15 21:56:00 Well these speakers did say they had a mode to switch 2.1 to 5.1 sound. They just didn't say that it would be so bad.

Plus I can make mono sound play fine in 2.1, so why not in 5.1?

620660 2007-12-15 22:03:00 Is there something similar to this in control panel ? (www.imagef1.net.nz)

If there is, see whats it got in it.

This isnt 8 channel / 7:1 tho.

The pic is after u run it. The name of the icon is CMI Audio Config.

Yours may have Audio in it (Not the sounds and audio devices icon tho).
