620511 2007-12-12 06:52:00 I just bought a MSI Geforce 7800GS AGP 256MB/256BIT to replace my GeForce FX 5700. It fits in the AGP slot with no problems but when I switch it on, a piercing whistle comes from it making it totally unusable.
Any ideas why this is happening??
TIA

620512 2007-12-12 07:55:00 Is it a tune you know ? - sorry couldn't resist that :D

Serious Now -
Does the card have a Cooling fan or is it a heatsink with no fan.?

Does the card actually start Ok apart from the whistle and display graphic's on the screen ?

If it does have a fan, listen very carefully to see if the noise is comming from there - if it is, being New take it back its faulty. One way of testing this, while turned off is to hold something like a pen (nothing metal) in the fan to stop it from spinning start the PC and see if its quiet - but only do this few a few seconds as it will over heat other wise.

620514 2007-12-12 08:01:00 KMoA really, was it a second hand? If it was it could be the graphic card faulty. If it wasn't a second hand version, your motherboard wouldn't not be able to support the graphic card. 7800 are powerful, they should be PCI-E.

Otherwise your powersupply is low, graphic like 700 requires at least 300W. Check your Power Supply and tell me.

I wondering how much it cost you to buy the 7800, it's would be dare for AGP.

What? Don't listen to this guy KMoA.

Are you sure none of your fans (CPU fan, system fan etc) are not hitting any cables? Sometimes high-speed fans makes that annoying noise when it hits a cable.

620517 2007-12-12 08:29:00 It does have a fan and will use the pen test in it. It starts Ok but havn't allowed it to run more than a few seconds so don't know if it displays graphics.
Will check to see if Mb will support it.
I have a 450w power supply
Thanks

620518 2007-12-12 08:35:00 Does the system turn on tho??

While its whistling??

If not the voltage of the AGP slot may not support the voltage of the card .

Does the mobo have an LED on it, near the AGP slot??

If it does, and the mobo is an ASUS mobo . I'm pretty sure if this LED is on, it'll telling you the above .

If it's what I'm thinking of, then you have to plug in a lead from the 12v rail on your power supply. It is probably a molex plug for that card. It should be at the end of the card - farthest from the external connections to the case slot.

That should stop that whistle.
