620452 2007-12-12 01:49:00 Hi,
Firstly, could you please ensure that your reply is in basic language as I'm still a newbi to this stuff.
Ok, I travel frequently around Fiji doing voluntary work at schools. Computers in Fiji are riddled with viruses and Trojan horses, especially in rural areas where there is no internet to update anti-virus programmes. I have used brand new computers in Fiji that could be kicked to death by an Amstrad.
Is it possible to download a programme/application that I can run off a CD, that will virus check, detect (including Trojan Horses) and heal without having to load programmes onto systems? Like a programme that I could update just prior to leaving (with the latest patches) that I could burn to a CD?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. And thanks to all the people at PressF1 that keep helping me out……… ;)

620453 2007-12-12 02:05:00 No, You can't run an antivirus software off of your CD.
They have to be loaded in your computer. They have to block the virus before it grabs your machine.
You have to be careful as alot of the worms can not be killed without a full system reload. Hope this helps. d

620454 2007-12-12 02:05:00 Well u could get a U3 flash disk, which will let you install Avast on it (and other programs).

Good thing about it, it wont install anything on any system or in the registry.

It saves whatever on the flash disk.

Bad thing tho, you'll have to pay for it (Avast), as it isnt free.

Not sure how long it'll last until it runs out, never left it on this U3 long enough to find out.

But, all you need is a spare USB 2 port.

620455 2007-12-12 02:08:00 If there is no internet, how can the PCs be infested with such hostile programs? qazwsxokmijn (102)
620456 2007-12-12 02:19:00 Its possible to scan from CD. You also will need to run spyware scans as spyware infections are getting more common.

There are some AV software providers that you can download a free AV scanner to do just this, it will run off the CD. Some will only detect & not clean.
Mcafee have one, NOD & FProt used to have one (unsure if they still do)

McAfee Avert Stinger. Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses

Try the NOD, MCAfee & Malware killer (not sure if these all the full programs
or just a stand alone scanner)

Or use a USB pendrive(be carefull as they can get infected by the PC)
Sandisk U3 usb pendrives come with a trial of Avast antivirus. Xsoft32 is a very good spyware scanner (US$14??) for U3 drives.

620457 2007-12-12 02:25:00 Its possible .

But extremely unlikely unless they are swapping dodgy disks .

620459 2007-12-12 02:45:00 Ok, here is what I understand so far:

While some say it is impossible to do what I am asking, others suggest I purchase a thing called a Sandisk U3 usb pendrives which comes preloaded with a trial version of an anti virus / trojan remover application called Avast. I simply plug this into a USB2 port, and it will scann the HD and heal the problems (which, to answer Mr qazwsxokmijn, are spread by people file swapping using flash drives.). Have I got this right? It seems too easy. We are dealing with computers here, so there must be a catch. Will the Sandisk U3 usb pendrive get infected? If yes, then the whole exercise would be a waist. Correct?. Can you clarify please - but keep it simple for this computer illiterate.. Cheers...

620460 2007-12-12 02:57:00 Since its a long way to Fiji, I'd cover all bases.Plan for the worst & you wont get caught out.
take a u3 & a CD with the AV scanners burn onto it

U3 drives are so cheap I'd get one anyway. Update the AV definitions
before you go.
u3 wont(easily) run on Win98, some have issues with Win2000.

Yep . It is too easy .
You need in addition to Avast - which is an antivirus, some antispyware programs as well .

And some serious education for the users .
I suggest telling me this is not easy to fix due the lack of net and updates - so they might just have to suffer the consequences if they persist .
