621409 2007-12-15 18:23:00 A while ago, I was trying to transfer a large file from my computer to another via ethernet.

My computer connects directly to my 4-port router/adsl modem. The hub also connects direct to the router. The other computer was connected to the hub

The file transfer would always fail. Out of sheer anooyance, I took the hub out of the picture by using its connection to the router and plugging it into the computer. Worked fine.
Is my hub screwed or something?

Who knows? If speed and duplex settings are not right with a hub you will get heaps of ethernet errors. Problematic hubs are really not worth worrying about these days when cheap switches are available.

Whether the ports are on a router, or on a standalone hub/switch.

It either goes or it doesnt. It should detect whatever and it should work.

I've never seen any duplex, or speed settings, on a hub/switch.

Just as long as you're not using a crossover for whatever, thats plugged into the hub, it should work.

I dont think there's any diff between an ethernet hub and a switch is there?

If a ethernet cable plugs into it, then its both.
