621280 2007-12-15 00:03:00 Just recently my computer has started making random whirling sounds. This happens out of the blue and nothing appears to be triggering it. I belive that this sound is made by the fans because about 5 mins ago (2nd this sound has occured) I managed to open speedfan and check and it stated both my fans were running at 100%. What I want to know now is what is wrong with my fans? Prior to this fault, my fans were both running at 54%. Now, after a restart of my computer, it appears that only 1 of my fans are working....What does this mean?

Thanks in advance

621281 2007-12-15 00:11:00 Well after a second restart the first fan appears to be working again...

But what is causing both the fans to run at 100%? Does this indicate a possible failure of some sort?

Thanks

621282 2007-12-15 00:21:00 Depends what the mobo / system is.

Some systems adjust the fan speeds etc automatically depending on the temp.

621283 2007-12-15 00:27:00 Well i've had this pc for over 3 years, haven't adjusted/changed any fans and this has started occuring last Sunday.

EDIT: My pc is a HP Pavilion t660a, I believe the motherboard is a ASUS P4SD-LA (Oxford)

Just happened once again...this time I managed to screenshot speedfan.

Also, don't know if this helps but both times this occured today, I was scanning with Spybot. The first time it occured was during normal net surfing.

Thanks

621284 2007-12-15 00:38:00 Could be high CPU usage.

Spybot depending on what version , I tried the latest version, the other day.

It was crap lol.

I could walk faster. That took forever just to load and forever to actually do anything.

621285 2007-12-15 00:47:00 It could be, but why has it just started occuring recently? It's been fine for 3 years...

Yep, the latest version, it is a bit slow...hopefully their next version is much faster...

621286 2007-12-15 00:54:00 Could be other programs that cause high CPU usage.

If it only started recently.

621287 2007-12-15 01:02:00 Well I haven't installed any new programs (except for Speedfan) for about a month. The CPU usage has been increasing to 100%, at least a few times a day for the last 3 years and nothing has happened...Does this mean my fan's are about to die? :horrified Bear in mind though, that both fan's are doing this, not just the CPU fan... 621288 2007-12-15 01:09:00 Have u BEEN in the case, in the last 3 years??

Might need a clean.

621289 2007-12-15 02:03:00 Clean the dust out with methylated spirits and put some vaseline in the fan bearings. Use cotton buds to wipe the stuff.
All of the stuff can be bought from local shopping centre such as foodtown.

note: methylated spirits makes it easier to remove the dust and give it about 5 hours to evaporate. (depends on the room temperature)
The vaseline reduces the noise of the fans and acts as a lubricant in almost solid form. (so it does not fall out)
