2007-12-18 03:46:00 | Hello all techs. I have a problem. Last night the computer was fine. This morning when I turned it on...Nothing. No power lights etc. Checked with multimeter & power at plug into tin box. Remove case side to check switch. Switch is push on / push off type. When switched is pressed, only momentary contact across it, then it is open again. So. Is this switch supposed to be 230v mains power switch. Power on when switched? Or is it a pulsing switch that swithes a power transistor or similar? I thought of connecting the two wires from the switch together, then thought better of it. The white & black wires from the switch are thin. They go to a tiny plug on the motherboard. They don't look big enough for 'full current' carrying. What should I do? Thanks. PJ.

2007-12-18 04:09:00 | To check if its the on switch (start the PC from front I assume) follow the wires from the switch, remove the two connectors from the pins and with a small screwdriver touch the two pins , this will "kick" the mobo into life if the switch is faulty - dont hold the screw driver there, only enough to make a quick contact. If the board doesn't boot, then there is another power problem some place. The PSU reduces the Voltage down to (in round figures) 12 & 5 Volt.

2007-12-18 04:18:00 | W...Power has been on to the PSU socket a few minutes now. I can smell that 'burnt bakelite' smell. Mot quite the same as a burnt out motoe. More a swith or connector failure. PJ | Poppa John (284) | |
2007-12-18 04:23:00 | Hmmmmm - next thing I would try is connect another PSU to the Board, the 20 /24 pin connector and only the CPU power plugged in,( if its got one) no need for the HD / Optical - only to see if the board will boot. Hang it out the side, see if the board boots like that.

2007-12-18 04:29:00 | W... PSU is out & resting on the top of the case. I have taken the cover off it & it smells. I do not have another PSU. I will pop across the road later & see if metla has one I can borrow. Thanks so far. PJ

2007-12-18 21:38:00 | OK. Metla doesnt have any spare PSU's so that is that for the moment. Just as well we still have Maryann's computer. This PSU has 3 "Outlets". One 20 pin connecter. One 4 wire set of wires with 3 connectors, drives A,E,F. The other one has two connectors, the Hard drive & spare.. Is this how they all are? PJ
