621908 2007-12-17 01:03:00 i just put a windows operating system cd into my cdrom drive, it spun once and loud bang and a kind of shattering noise happened. I turn th pc off and removed the drive......is the drive saveable? i cant open it by pushing a paper clip into the manual open holeas there is pieces of cd jamming it. :-( it was like a brand new cdrom disc too...... can i get the pieces out or is the drive trrash material? aidanmaz (7180)
621909 2007-12-17 01:08:00 Turn it on and push the pin in.

I dont think it will open if the power is off.

621910 2007-12-17 01:12:00 Yes it will speedy.... :illogical

It SHOULD be salvagable, if you can do it yourself. Otherwise get a new one, it's not worth paying someone to try and fix it.

Open it up (screws on bottom) and carefully remove all the bits of CD. See if it still works. A new DVD RW these days is only about $45.

Warrantys are usuaully not applicable if a CD shatters.

621911 2007-12-17 01:13:00 Hmm, it depends. The CD might've sliced a ribbon cable , damaged the cd lens, who knows. If it's still under warranty, give them a ring and ask about it. If they say no, take a screwdriver to it and have a look. sliced cables, if they're the replaceable kind. are pretty easy to change, but the problem is actually getting them. You might be able to get them from some other drives, but don't hold your breath. It might just be easier to buy a new drive from Trademe. But yeah, if the warranty is a no-go, open 'er up and remove the pieces with some tweezers, have a look round for some damage, and if you can't see any, plug it back in, and put a cd you don't really care about into it, see if it reads it. ubergeek85 (131)
621912 2007-12-17 01:15:00 mmm it is a dvd rw all formats, and DL.il try to remove the bits.....kinda odd that this happpened with a commercial disc, shud i b concerned if i fix it and reuse the drive again? aidanmaz (7180)
621913 2007-12-17 01:19:00 I would be more worried about the cd than the burner.

That costs more than the burner.

621914 2007-12-17 01:19:00 Nah, some cd's just blow up in the drive. The speeds that they go at are astronomical really... Some cd's have a cracked inner ring, others just badly made... depends really.

Damn, I see why you're called speedy gonzales... Some info on exploding cds (albeit a bit unrelated) is here www.powerlabs.org
