623318 2007-12-21 00:21:00 My Toshiba laptop recently failed. It wont turn on, no fan, nothing. We are replacing it, however we need the data stored on the HD. I was thinking of extracting the old HD and cloning it onto another laptop. What kind of adaptor and software would be used for this? Ripdog (11014)
623319 2007-12-21 00:27:00 Connect it to a desktop.

What kind of hdd is in this?

If its IDE connect it to an IDE cable on a desktop.

You'll need something like this (www.dse.co.nz)

If its SATA, you'll need a system with SATA onboard.

623320 2007-12-21 00:32:00 You could get a USB case for an IDE 2.5" drive which would let you connect it to another computer (even a laptop). That would be more useful in the long term than the adapter, although it might cost a bit more than $10. Graham L (2)
623321 2007-12-21 00:44:00 The problem with #2 is that we have no full tower desktops in the house. There's an iMac and a bunch of laptops. The main problem is software, what would you recommend? Ripdog (11014)
623322 2007-12-21 00:47:00 Total Commander (http://www.ghisler.com/) is very good for copying data off a buggered hard drive. wratterus (105)
623323 2007-12-21 01:00:00 As Graham said a Hard Drive enclosure. Plenty of them on Trademe or a retailer. You just open the enclosure, screw in 4 screws to mount the HDD inside it then plug it in. Simple.
Hard Drive Enclosures (www.trademe.co.nz)

If you get one with USB you can connect it to the mac or other notebooks.

IF it is not the hard drive that is damaged then it will just show up as another drive letter. You can then just drag and drop what you need to recover between drives.

IF the hard drive is damaged then connecting it to another computer might not be the last of your problems, you may need data recovery software.

IF The Hard drive is OK and you can get your data off it, then you can then use this enclosure as a backup drive which will plug into any computer with USB.
