623224 2007-12-20 13:43:00 I have taken 8 avi files with a Finepix S5000 camera. They add up to a total of 424.8MB approx. I have joined them together into 1 file using Virtual Dub but the size of the file is 4.9GB for only 12:12 minutes duration!!!
The 8 individual files are:
Dimensions 320x240 pixels
Duration variable (between 35 secs to 4:08 mins)
Bit rate 128 kbps
Audio Sample size 8 bit
Audio Format PCM
Frame Rate 30 frames/second
Data Rate 579kbps
Video Samle Size 24 bit
Video compression Uncompressed
Average file size 53.1MB

The combined file is the same except:
Duration 12:12 mins
Data Rate 1044kbps
File size 4960MB

How can I get the combined file to an acceptable size so that it will fit on to a 4.7GB DVD or better still, a CD?
Are there any avi compression programs that don't lose video or audio quality that may help? Free would be more desirable.

Where did all the extra data come from?

623225 2007-12-20 18:22:00 Haven't tried to join files using Virtualdub, only used it for cutting parts out!Sounds like a setting not set correctly, had a quick look through the help but couldn't see anything about joining files.Video/Direct Stream Copy setting doesn't help?
But there are free ones out there. Found this googling.

623226 2007-12-20 18:33:00 Are you planning on making a Playable DVD of them or just putting them on a DVD for storage purpose?

If a playable DVD is required then once you create the DVD they will be compressed and fit easily. Just add the file(s) to Nero Vision and they will create what you need providing the AVI Codec is recognised by Nero.

Nero Vision will handle the files without merging them, just add them in the order you want them in.

If just storage then try Rar'ing them. When you Rar a large file split the rar into 50Mb or 100Mb files makes it a bit easier.

623227 2007-12-20 18:33:00 It sounds like it has joined and converted them to an uncompressed AVI file.

In Virtualdub you need to make sure that on the Video tab you set the option of 'Direct Stream Copy'
If your version of VirtualDub has an audio tab set the same option for that as well.

623228 2007-12-20 22:02:00 i done something similar the other day. using MediaCoder, an opensource well media coder. took my 3 files totalling 3GB down to a 364MB mp4 file. no quality loss.
mediacoder.sourceforge.net

have not looked at any of the settings so could probably have changed the output format. just have to select join before clicking start.

623231 2008-01-14 17:28:00 Thanks all of you. I have followed CYaBro's instructions and the completed file is a 453MG avi file. All I have to do is convert it so that it will play on a DVD player. Once again thank you all for sharing your knowledge.

Have a prosperous New Year
