622652 2007-12-18 23:48:00 Hey guys,

I got me a new computer however when I tried to install XP the first time, it loaded up to the point where you push a key to actually install but them it blue screened! I was installing from a USB CDROM which the motherboard picks up ok.

Then I installed Fedora 8 which went on fine, however I can't seem to get the nvidia driver going. The X server just crashes whenever I try to enable it.

However now when I try to install XP it doesn't even get to the blue loading screen, it just says Setup is inspecting your configuration then the screen just goes black and it sits there with no activity on the CDROM.

I have tried installing through both USB CDROM and plugging it into the IDE channel, and have tried 3 different XP CD's.

Does anyone have any idea why it won't install (or why the nvidia driver doesn't work in linux)?

Here's the specs:
AMD 64 X2 4800
Gigabyte GA-M56S-S3 motherboard
Geforce 8800GT
320GB Western Digital Sata

Cheers,
Rob

622653 2007-12-18 23:55:00 WHAT did the BSOD say?? Speedy Gonzales (78)
622654 2007-12-19 00:04:00 Ha, thats the thing. It didn't say anything. No Stop code, no error description, just the usual about checking any new hardware in your machine. hamstar (4)
622655 2007-12-19 00:44:00 I would check this (www.gigabyte.co.nz)

To see if it needs a BIOS update, before you can install Windows on it.

Look under 4800+

What version of the BIOS is on it? F1, 2 or 3?

622656 2007-12-19 01:48:00 Good question. I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the link.

So this means I have to flash the BIOS for windows to install I guess? I don't need a floppy drive to do that do I?

622657 2007-12-19 02:08:00 Depending on what the speed is of yours (altho it does turn on)

It maybe the prob.

Well you'll need a floppy or bootable usb flash drive (hopefully the update runs in DOS and Windows (not just Windows).

622658 2007-12-20 10:36:00 Well, I've done quite a bit since posting .

Checked the BIOS it is F1 so thats all good . By wiping the hard drive the windows installer suddenly wanted to be friends again . It started up and hit the BSOD again . I found the error code too, 0x0000007B which is something to do with not having the right drivers for the hard disk .

Anyway I thought I would try installing the sata drivers (even though everything was set to emulate IDE in the BIOS), had a hell of a time digging out a floppy drive and disk - which I am curious why something like windows would still need this? I have been floppy-drive-less for years thanks to linux, I hate the things! (In fact I don't think I ever used a floppy drive on linux . . since 03 . . ) What the hell microsoft come on!

Got it to install
Anyway I changed a setting in my BIOS to make the hard drive into Large from Auto (LBA?) and plugged a USB stick in to see if I could use that instead of a floppy . I couldn't, but it didn't blue screen this time and I managed to install it! YAY!

Started it all up fine installed my drivers yehaw rebooted, it gets past the bootsplash but has hiccup, and then another blue screen! This time it is a 0x000000EA with a little nv4_disp below it . Crap . Starts fine in safe mode but I can't play CRYSIS in safe mode!

Made a custom install disk integrating drivers
So then my friend tells me to try making an install disk with my drivers and everything slipstreamed . So I download nLite and make a disk on my neighbours windows box . SP2, integrate the chipset drivers and the graphics drivers . Reinstall with no BSOD issues YAY!

After it is all installed it won't even start up because the graphics drivers are installed already . So after the bootsplash that same BSOD 0x000000EA with the nv4_disp after it . Sonuva . . . .

DualChannel Not enabled
Suddenly I realize that the DIMMS are not in dual channel mode! I switch the stick into the next slot and start it up again . Same error :( Reinstall windows again! Same error! :(

So my friend starts telling me I need to install vista the hardware is too new or XP but I ain't taking that crap, I do not want vista on this machine . Yuk .

But alas, now I am stuck . I inspected all the connections and everything, all seems fine . Tried running with only one stick (tried both) to no avail .

:badpc: :badpc:

Now at the point of searing my face off with a redhot bushknife, I am running memtest on a single stick . . . Maybe this will give me some answers . I am going to leave it running all night, then all day tomorrow .

But does anyone have any other ideas/suggestions of what it might be . . please? :dogeye:

Thanks .

622661 2007-12-20 11:24:00 Thanks! I will give that a go tomorrow. I also tried this site: support.microsoft.com

But the settings on there didn't help either.

*sigh*
