622544 2007-12-19 01:10:00 the book and tutor complain that if you install drivers after you install the hardware you are allowing windows to install its generic drivers thus "corrupting" the hardware somehow.

Really. And this teacher has what practical experience?
I've just finished a build. Did windows first, and gee what do you know, it hadn't done the chipset drivers, graphics or sound.

So then I loaded in the motherboard CD, did those, then downloaded the latest Nvidia driver for the card it had.

That would have been rather tricky, installing the drivers before I had installed the motherboard or graphics card, don't you think?

Didn't see Windows doing anything about it at all.

Vista might, but so what, then you just update it with the proper driver. (assuming there is one)

622545 2007-12-19 01:34:00 The only bit of hardware that got corrupted, on this, was the tuner's EEPROM.

It managed to screw that up itself. Without any help from me or drivers.

And this is known on a few forums.

Dont think Leadtek liked it, when I told them that their Deluxe tuners have a flaw (their EEPROMS get corrupted, and the drivers no matter how hard you try wont install, and it wont work).

That was until I managed to find a DOS program to restore it.

622547 2007-12-19 17:41:00 It depends on the hardware. Some hardware instructions stipulate install hardware first, sometimes the instructions state install the software/drivers first.
I know for a fact the the Epson Stylus range of drivers look for the printer during the install of the drivers. But yeah, other printers require the install of the driver first

Getting the latest drivers is not always the best. I have had the odd occasion when the latest driver caused problems and I have had to back to an older driver.I was reading somewhere recently this same thing. They advised getting drivers that are stable (a few months old at least). If you are still having graphics issues, then upgrade. Otherwise stay with what works

622548 2007-12-19 18:00:00 I find that reading the instructions that come with the hardware (when it's provided) tells you how to install it.
From experience, any thing attached directly to the motherboard is installed first then the drivers are loaded.
USB stuff is usually (but not always) load the driver then attach the device.

622549 2007-12-27 15:47:00 My experiences:

Hauppauge devices, drivers first...I know what I'm saying here.
Canon printers...let the wizard do it on line
Kodak cameras...select JUST the drivers off the CD and don't install anything else..too much bloatware.
MOBOs...the hardware first, of course or there's nothing to do.
HDDs...let Windows handle it unless you're playing RAID here.
Optical drives...again, let the wiz do it all.
Soundcards... the wiz is a whiz at this too.
ZIP drives...PNP
Sandisk Sansa...use the CD drivers.
Webcams...CD drivers first.
Routers...mixed ideas here...some require the software, but not usually. Use the Columbus method.
Memorex flat scanners...USE THE CD...THERE IS NO WAY AROUND THIS!
Sandisk Card readers...USB stuff really doesn't need a driver.
IDE ULTRA Expansion cards..I haven't figgered this one out yet..I still need to find how to make it work.
