622580 2007-12-18 22:46:00 When I play some games on my xbox there are a whole bunch of horizontal lines along the top of the screen. It seems that they aren't just white, but are actually bits from the screen just in the wrong place, as they change when I move about. It only happens with some games (viva pinata, which came with the xbox) and all DVD's. I don't think it's a hardware thing because most of my games run just fine.

I know this is a PC forum, I tried the XBOX ones, but the people in there were useless. So I'm sorry if this is a bit out of scope. I just thought you guys might have an answer.

622581 2007-12-18 22:51:00 How are you connecting the Xbox to the TV? Component cable?
What sort of TV is it? CRT? LCD? Plasma?

622582 2007-12-18 22:59:00 Using the component cable plugged into a fairly old crt. i suspected the TV at first, but it's just that for the large majority of games it runs just fine. It's just annoying with DVD's and viva pinata (which I actually don't play, but my gf does). I have sound plugged into the stereo, which provides a problem because the cable isn't really designed for that, so there's a fair amount of pull on the cables as they only just fit.

Do MS patch the Xbox? If so where can I download them?

622583 2007-12-19 00:29:00 The do provide firmware updates.
I think the Xbox has to have internet access and there will be an option somewhere.

I would get an RCA extension cable for the audio leads that way you won't be damaging the cable.

622584 2007-12-19 00:42:00 it could possibly be related to the refresh rate setting of the games. Some console games offer an option to choose between 50 & 60 hz. On modern TV's it's not an issue, but the NZ PAL standard is 50 hz and some older tv's don't deal well with 60.

On reallly old tv's there was a vertical hold setting to align the picture properly.
