623392 2007-12-21 05:45:00 My computer got a virus that made it unable to start up properly so I got it fixed and re-installed Windows XP Home Edition (SP1). I lost Everything. When I ran it once it was fixed the internet would not work so I booted the computer from The PC World disc with Ubuntu linux 7.10 on it and everything including the internet worked so I decided I would install Ubuntu. In the Installation it went fine until I reached the HardDisk partition part. There was a error, now Xp does not boot without error and I cant install Ubuntu is there away to delete the whole HardDisk and start a fresh or is my computer totally broke :horrified MongooseRoadkill (13197)
623393 2007-12-21 05:54:00 Have u got the XP cd??

If u have, delete both partitions in the setup screen. Then reinstall XP.

Or connect this hdd to the system you're on now and format it.

Then put it back in the other PC and reinstall XP with the XP cd.

623394 2007-12-21 06:05:00 I have the installation CD but the error occurs when I' m loading the setup, there is a problem with a DDL file. :badpc: MongooseRoadkill (13197)
623395 2007-12-21 06:13:00 What is the exact error message ?

You can also try cleaning the CD in case it has some dirt on it and not reading correctly. Use Isopropyl Alcohol if you have any on a very soft cloth or tissue paper to clean it. Other wise you can breath on it ( fog it) and carefully wipe it clean as well.

Usually you would boot from the XP CD, wipe any partitions ( if do a complete install) then tell it to format the drive, which it does, then it copies the install files to the drive and loads windows. After that you then need to install any drivers that relate to your Motherboard, these usually are Audio, Graphic, LAN, + any others the board needs.

If you didn't load in the LAN or Modem drivers when doing the first install, thats why it may have not worked on the internet, Ubuntu has built in drivers for some hardware.

Boot off the Win XP CD you have. Delete all partitions or do you want to dual boot from a hard drive with Ubuntu?

You may have a problem with a dll file rather than ddl.

Do you have only one hard drive? If so then how many partitions?

Sorry for the questions. You will need to boot from a cd and decide from there.

After your computer was "fixed" were the motherboard drivers installed?
Are you on broadband or dial up?

If dial up then was the modem installed?

Why did you reinstall Windows?

If some system files had been trashed by the virus a repair install would have been enough.
But just cleaning the PC of malware and leaving Windows alone is enough usually.

Thats the Problem the computer would only start up in safe mode otherwise the whole computer goes to sleep and your unable to wake it up in safe mode almost nothing work so I used a program called The Ultimate Boot CD and retrieved my some of Important stuff. I did Try a repair install It didn't do anything :(

Its a Dell Dimension 4600

The setup works now without error (just had to clean the disk) but when I go to partition C: I get a message saying that WinXP cannot recognize the partition and that the setup cannot install WinXP on the partition I selected it the promts me to delete the partition.

So I go back select C: and press D for Delete then a new screen comes up and says

"The Partition you tried to delete is a system partition and my contain Diagnostics or hardware configuration programs, programs to start up Opperating Systems"

So do I delete the partition it or just keep using the computer as a CD booted Ubuntu Linux machine :(
