623463 2007-12-21 22:43:00 I have

AMD 64 3400+ 2.2gHz
2.00 GB RAM
Radeon X1300 (256mb?)
Vista Ultimate

If i was to get a GeForce 8600 GT 512MB PCI Express would i notice much improvement in games? Is there anything else I should be looking to upgrade to make the video card work better? Other than CPU or motherboard

Thanks

623464 2007-12-22 01:37:00 Yes you probably would see a slight improvement. You would probably see a bigger improvement if you changed to Win XP... Vista is nothing but a resource hungry beast. chiefnz (545)
623465 2007-12-22 03:03:00 is dx10 supported in XP? I'd thought is wasn't. If it is then go for it. I'd just stick with Vista though. Just reading something about SLI (more than one graphics card) has anyone tried this? The site endorsed doing it, but I thought I'd ask here. Do most Mobos support it? Thebananamonkey (7741)

No, I dont think it does.

More recent mobos support SLI.

If you are currently using onboard sound, you "may" improve your frame rate by adding a sound card. It worked for me.

Show me something DX10 only and I'd agree.

SLI will give you a performance increase but certainly not double. But it is double the price, and your motherboard would need SLI (as opposed to Crossfire) - 2 PCI-E slots.

623469 2008-01-03 21:09:00 I don't like to bring up old threads but since its not that old and its mine I will =]

Im going to get a new card defiantly but which one is my question. Im looking at the 8600GT 512MB as I said before but will it be strong enough with my system to run Counter-Strike: Source and HL2 games at decent and consistent fps (100+) ? Also what is the best brand of 8600GT because I see there is Leadtek, Asustek and all the others out there. Just need some advice :D Thanks!

623470 2008-01-03 23:16:00 CS and HL don't need much of a card to run so yes.

ASUS comes with a 3 yr warranty. Go with them.

623471 2008-01-03 23:55:00 Thanks for the advice. This is the cheapest Asus 512MB 8600GT I can find on price spy Here (www.nzoczone.com) looks to be a lot faster than my current card so should be sweet. If anyone else has any more helpful advice it would be appreciated =] Thanks again pctek w000t (11562)
623472 2008-01-04 00:22:00 Just remember if you buy anything down to a price, you will not be happy for long. JJJJJ (528)
