1421756 2016-06-11 23:06:00 Hi all, I have an older PC which I virtually use as a back up, but lately it has been freezing up on me even only after a couple minutes of use.
Initially when I turned it on, it displayed I had a bad hardrive, so I replaced it with a new one and installed win 7, [after many attempts as it keep on freezing up on me] the only way I could get to work was to leave it off overnight, then being cold it went all the way through and installed, but now it still continues to freeze up on me after a few minutes of use.

I have blown out everything in side the case with air.
I used windows memory tester and they seem good.
when i first turn it on, the monitor gets a couple weird lines at the top of screens then clears, it is a brand new monitor, so could it be the video card ?
funny how the longer you leave it turned off, when started again it will go a bit longer then it will freeze up after 10 minutes or so.

I am not sure what to do now, so any help would be appreciated.
thanks

the motherboard is ASUS P4800 S-X
video card sapphire radeon XT 256 MB

How much ram is installed??

What programs did you install after you reinstalled Win7?

1421758 2016-06-12 01:15:00 Thanks speedy, it has 2 x1 gb sticks of memory, only installed drivers then avast, I don't know if it will be able to do a longer test as it keeps on freezing up, but will give it a go.
thanks

1421759 2016-06-12 01:22:00 You sure it's the P4800 S-X?? There's also a P4800S-X and the P4P800S-X

I would say more ram would help, if it still exists. The freezing will be, because of the lack of ram

1421760 2016-06-12 01:47:00 What temp is cpu running at, is cpu heatsink well connected thermally to the heatsink? zqwerty (97)
1421761 2016-06-12 02:00:00 the only way I could get to work was to leave it off overnight, then being cold it went all the way through and installed, but now it still continues to freeze up on me after a few minutes of use. That's quite a good hint:) It could be the heatsink paste between the CPU and heatsink is bad/dried out and the CPU is overheating.

If it works OK while cold then its generally a heat related problem someplace, which being an old motherboard could also be dry solder joints, and when warmed up lose contact resulting in a freeze. It could also be the graphic Card failing once warm - thats easy to sort, put in a known good graphic card to see if it still does it.

If its a motherboard, trying to locate the exact faulty spot could be errrrrrrrrrr rather interesting ;)

Your right speedy it is a p4p 800 S-X, sorry about that .
I tried each memory stick by themselves, no change still freezing up on me .
I will have to leave it for a while to let it cool down again .

So later I will check the cpu temp, what temp should it be running at ? is there software available for that or is it in windows ?
I will have to get some of that paste if it is running hot .

Thanks everyone for your help, very much appreciated .

1421765 2016-06-12 07:22:00 Well tried it one more time, the screen stayed blank nothing at all come through, so whatever was causing it has failed completely, if I knew for sure it was only the video card then I would try to find another but not worth buying a new motherboards on an old pc like this.

thanks for all your help.
