1418676 2016-04-05 20:41:00 I have always figured there was some creative accounting used in the promotion of Solar Power and it seems the chickens are coming home to roost.

In what way is it 'creative accounting'?
You are not making much sense, but that is normal.

1418678 2016-04-05 22:31:00 It sounds more like a scam by the power company to me. It reminds me of the bad old days of the Auckland Electric PB who charged a surcharge if you had gas hot water from the Auckland gas co. I.e. we're losing revenue so were' going to charge more.

maybe Telecom could adopt this strategy. "you're not making many phone calls on our network so we will charge you more..
The power companies will get what they deserve when storage batteries get better and people will go off the grid ..

NZ Post are doing just that

But then you have never accused of being a dunderhead.!

:p

NZ Post use the same strategy. We're losing money so we'll charge more. When we lose even more we'll charge even more. That ought to teach you a lesson.:devil

This:

Many sellers of solar photo voltaic systems over the last 12 months have been using the ability to sell rooftop power back to the national grid as a sales point.

Trustpower is buying back rooftop power at 7-8 cents a unit, which is what electrical power can be bought for on the wholesale market.

“On the wholesale market you can contract to buy stuff you know is going to be there. But with solar you don't. If it's a really shitty day it's not there. ”

On Truspower's analysis the only network that stacked up for solar power without batteries was Marlborough and it was for about 20 per cent of consumers who could use the power that they were generating from the solar PV as it was generated.

“So In other words they had to be either home during the day or have really up to date appliances where they could programme the start up at 10-11am and run till 2 -3 pm,” says Graeme.

Plus, exactly, high sunshine places it may be worthwhile (if you can afford the initial huge cost).
Like, um - Australia.

Other places - lets say Wellington, may do better on wind power.
Wind turbine in your backyard perhaps?

1418685 2016-04-06 03:06:00 There's not much point to grid connected solar power in NZ. Most of our power is Hydro generated anyway so there's little to no impact to our so called "carbon footprint" by shifting from one renewable resource to another. Also power companies really have no need of the extra generation during the day, I'm not sure why they agree to pay anything for it. If it was me I'd just say sorry don't want it.

Where Solar makes sense is where it's a similar price for a standalone system compared to getting mains connected, then it's a no brainer. It takes 10-20 years to recoup the costs of a standalone system in power savings alone, but difficult to factor inflation into that. Batteries keep getting better though. Going off grid and generating my own power is a tempting Idea for after the mortgage is paid off in a few years.

But yes the marketing hype for solar power is misleading, the potential savings of a grid connected system relies largely on the continued support of the power companies who really have nothing to gain from doing so. The buyback cost has dropped significantly already, now they are looking to raise charges, grid connected solar just looks worse and worse.

Solar is worthwhile in Aussie not because of the sunshine but rather because of government subsidies and incentives and higher buyback costs from power companies. And because they don't have the same level of renewable power generation we do.
