1417704 2016-03-18 04:57:00 "Doc Martin" is running in living room and he's "sending a patient to hospital" .

Which hospital?

Doesn't a common noun require a definite article? Unless hospital is capitalized I cannot see how this is good King's Engrish .

"I'm sending the patient to Hospital" . That would be correct although if one looks for a city named "Hospital" - one will likely as not find it anywhere .

One can send someone to ChCh .

One can send someone to France .

One can send someone to Hawaii .

One can send someone to THE hospital .

One can send someone to St . Mary's Hospital .

One can send someone to Fred's Hospital .

But I don't know how one can send someone to hospital . It lacks something .

Youse guys! Always jokers!

1417710 2016-03-18 05:39:00 Doc Martin, is he not from the United Kingdom? Bobh (5192)
1417711 2016-03-18 05:53:00 Maybe that's the difference between speaking English and speaking American. Sending a patient to hospital sounds perfectly acceptable to my English ear. Compare with; sending a felon to prison, sending a sailor to sea, sending an astronaut into space..................................... no definite articles needed right ? :clap Terry Porritt (14)
1417712 2016-03-18 07:40:00 The problem with "to" is that it can turn a noun into a verb. Highly unlikely that was the intention but you can not say it must have a definite, even an indefinite fits here.
