1418053 2016-03-29 02:11:00 $26M is still $26M regardless of how it was derived and could have been better spent elsewhere, like the Health Sector where Pharmac can’t afford lifesaving drugs available overseas, including Australia.

This trying to justify waste by dividing it by 4 million to make it seem less is plain nonsense and doesn’t alter the fact that $26M was totally wasted.

Any expenditure if you don't agree with it "could have been better spent elsewhere". The point I am making is that in the big scheme of things it is actually not that much. The total government expenditure in 2015 was $10.598 billion so in that context 26 mil is not much at all.

I wasn't "trying to make it seem less", I was just reducing it to a personal level. As to whether it was "totally wasted" depends on whether you think having a debate on our national emblem is a good thing or not. I absolutely agree that the process was handled appallingly badly, but I think it is a good thing to have the discussion.

The problem with that argument is that it wasn't a case of alternatives as to the best way to spend $26M. It was a straight out all or nothing bet, which was lost by whopping 285,000 votes. It is equivalent to a punter putting $26M on a horse to win and it runs second.

As for debating the issue, there has been any number of debates throughout history, but none I can think of were funded to the tune of $26M, and the referendum could have been held in conjunction with the next election.

No this was simply a Key ego trip and a New Flag was to highlight his legacy.

Whatever...

I think Key spoiled it by making it look like an ego trip, but in fact (and I am certainly no fan of his) I think he started off with good intentions.

Probably be another generation before we are ready to change, but at least now know It was a balls up in many ways. Only have to read some of the articles from various sites, and while some are the writers opinions, most are reasonably consistent.

One thing that is interesting is how the results stacked up by electorate Shown Here (electionresults.org.nz) what is a bit of a mystery is how in the hell do they get so many invalid votes 4554  All you have to do is put a tick in the area beside the one you wanted. Is that really to hard for some people ?
