My kids said they voted to keep the flag because it what was something Key wanted. Also me saying they could not live in my house anymore if they voted for a change might have been a factor.
If I was them I would not dare admit to voting for the new flag.

1418044 2016-03-26 00:53:00 I hope we can move on and speaking of being done and dusted, I hope they manufacture some flags, of which we can be proud. I am meaning the fabric and general brightness of same flag. Some look tattier than my husband's favourite sweatshirt.
Fly them high and often. I am always impressed to see the number of flags flying in Australia. Do all schools still fly the flag here? How many of our younger citizens can identify our flag? It doesn't have to be just government premises flying them, some companies do but certainly not all. Even if the company is foreign owned, if they have premises in this country then at least show some respect to our country. As is very apparent, our flag does not only belong to our current Prime Minister, it's ours, not his. Always has been.
Some time in our past I always felt one of our Prime Ministers would have been happier had we flown the red flag. No prizes for the right answer.
Wear your silver fern emblem if you wish, I always do when I am overseas.

1418046 2016-03-26 07:05:00 I am trying to buy a spittoon as a suitable place to mount a copy of the weird thing they call a flag. The Aussies copied it, that was funny at the time, but it should long ago have been tossed where all jokes should go if they're failing to amuse any more. R2x1 (4628)
1418047 2016-03-28 23:19:00 Why is everybody so hung up on the $26 million? $26 million /4 million people is about $6.50 each. Personally I was happy to donate $6.50 so we could have the chance to choose. My own opinions about the lack of change are:

The eventual short list was not nearly varied enough or contained really striking designs for a decent choice.
The whole process was really boring - no attempt to really generate any excitement.
The flag panel seemed weighted with "notable people" rather than anyone who could actually contribute ideas that reflected the country's views. The old codger who fronted it seemed to be the most dull personality they could find.
The "fighting under the flag" thing really reflected the views of quite a small minority but generated a lot of attention. What about the previous NZ flags - didn't we fight under those too?
And weren't we fighting for the ideals the flag(s) represented than the actual piece of cloth?
John Key stuffed it by coming down firmly for change thus sparking a lot of automatic no votes.

I agree with you mostly, it's not 4 million taxpayers in NZ though is it. All the kids, beneficiaries, etc paid nothing for the privilege and also we don't all contribute evenly because of the varying tax rates. How much it actually cost each tax payer is probably a lot more complicated to calculate than just 26/4 million. In any case it's not the amount it cost each of us that winds people up, it's the wasting of our money on things nobody was really asking for.

Personally I could not decide which I wanted and ended up not voting. I kinda liked the new flag but I also don't have a problem with the one we have and for me I don't see a problem with our flag reflecting our British heritage. It's part of who we are just as much as anything else is. I think there should have been at least some designs with the union jack still included, even if they ended up getting voted straight off we should have had the option.

1418050 2016-03-29 00:25:00 it's not 4 million taxpayers in NZ though is it.You do make a point, but not quite the right one, I think. The number probably ought to be $26 million / "number of eligible voters". I don't think whether you are a taxpayer or not is relevant - you are still a citizen/resident. I have no idea how many voters there actually are, but even if that made the per person cost $15 (say), I think that is still not an excessive amount. Tony (4941)
1418051 2016-03-29 00:31:00 Good bullet points Tony

My own rant:

¤ A flag should relate to how others see us not how we see ourselves. Others see the fern as a feather. Putting a feather on your flag would be like naming your football team after bunnies! (the NSW Rabbit-ohs)

¤ A feather or other cutsie flag would put us in the same league as newly-independent countries in the third world who choose a flag that looks good to them but lacks gravitas to the rest of the world

Whereas -

¤ The old flag tells people we probably speak English
¤ and we probably have a parliamentary democracy
¤ and British law procedures
¤ and are a well-established country not a johnny-come-lately
¤ It also aligns us with Australia - a good thing compared with possible alternatives

JK failed the basics. He thought a flag should look good from our point of view. In fact, the very best flag would be one aligned with his own point of view...

1418052 2016-03-29 00:48:00 The silver fern on a flag is not a feather just the same as a kiwi on the side of NZ Airforce planes is not a chicken.. All out overseas marketing is defined with a silver fern. I see no reason as to why we need a British colonial reminder on our flag. paulw (1826)
