1422275 2016-06-24 01:12:00 You can apply for and obtain a passport online, but they will want a suitable digital image, so be aware that there are very strict requirements around passport photos now.

I've just obtained a new passport, as has my son, and they are very very finnicky indeed about photos. Chin up, blank white background, and no smiles, glasses, hair obscuring features, etc etc, so my passport looks like a Soviet Police mug shot.

The Passport Office won't browse through your photos or try to extract the best one from the bunch, resize them, or any other modification. They'll just reject the lot of them and point you back to the 'photo requirements' section of the application form.

You will have to provide them with two identical photos correctly sized (or one emailed image as part of an online application) that meet their specific requirements. I'm not saying it can't be done, but unless you want to enter into a lengthy correspondence, your grand-daughter would be better to get her photos taken professionally, it is not expensive.

Photos from her old PP are no use either.

....and if you look like your passport photograph then you really need a holiday.

1422276 2016-06-25 02:44:00 The important thing about a passport photo is that it should look like you - in your own interest.

(ie, not because immigration cares)

If you don't look like your photograph, the automatic software scanning faces as you walk down the concourse will flag you for special treatment and it might be a lengthy process.

I took a selfie for my passport renewal by holding the camera in one hand. There were a few shadows so I removed them with Photoshop. I cropped it to the right size and submitted it but it was rejected because it didn't have enough pixels.

No problem - I put the photo into Photoshop and increased the number of pixels! - a process which reduces the quality - but they accepted it

I didn't have any problem going through Immigration, but it was only then that I realised the importance of having an accurate photo. My photo was not particularly accurate because the closeness of a hand-held camera caused a bit of distortion
