Batteries will certainly need to be replaced every few years and they are not cheap. I have no idea what the life of the solar panels is but I bet they don't last forever either. | CliveM (6007) | ||
| 1418687 | 2016-04-06 04:22:00 | Let me tell you I have had first-hand experience with Solar Power installed on two separate houses in Queensland going back to 2010 and it isnt all its cracked up to be despite the Queensland Governments generous contribution. Lets look at some of the drawbacks Ive encountered. 1: Believe it or not, it is hard to like the look of Solar Panels all over a house and in a lot of cases they devalue the saleability and value of your property. You could be talking $100K. 2: They only produce peak power for the short time the sun is in the best location. 3: The manufactures claim the panels are good for 20 years by which time they will have dropped below 80% output. Well in practice they drop to about 80% in the first year and carry on from there. 4: They are not maintenance free by any means. Leaves, Bird Droppings, Dust and the like further reduce their output so that requires them to be cleaned. So what you say. Well it isnt just a matter of climbing on the roof with a hose and broom, not any more. Health and safety require a suitably qualified scaffolder with all his staff and apparatus, including a High Visibility Vest ;) , to undertake such an operation and first clean alone disposes of your savings for the first 20 years. Dugi in post #10 has covered other aspects but from where I sit using anything other than Hydro in New Zealand is an absolute no brainer. |

Which be good if the greens weren't worried about slugs being affected where a dam goes. |
