| 1421731 | 2016-06-11 04:51:00 | I have a HDD that is RAW. Google leads me to several sites that purport to be able to change to NTFs, at a cost. Does anyone have any thoughts on what program, preferably free, I should use to be able to activate this HDD again? I don't need to recover the data, but it would be nice to do so, I have an external backup if I need to format the drive. | Bryan (147) | ||

You may need to "initialise" the disk first (Also done through Disk Management) If you do want to recover, use something like GetDataBack, Filescavenger etc... or try something free like Photorec\Testdisk. Of course, if the filesystem is so trashed that it's showing up as RAW - you will have to copy all the data off and back on again anyway, so restoring from a backup is probably less hassle. Also, if the filesystem is so trashed that it's showing as RAW - it's quite possible the hard drive is failing. I would run a full test with Seatools (or whatever the manufacturer's diagnostic test is) and also check all SMART data, after recovering anything, and before you bother trying to use it again. |
