624596 2007-12-26 03:03:00 For those who use USB flash drive pens for their backups please be aware that they are not fail-proof .

I have had two Adata flash drives, one for over three years and the other for nearly two years and have had no problems with either, despite the heavy use that both have had .

Last week, however, I used a family member's flash drive to transfer nearly 1GB of photos and files to my computer and, after scanning for viruses, it completely and utterly died on me just after beginning the transfer to my PC .

This flash drive is only four months old and has probably been used less than half a dozen times .

I know of a lot of people who treat these flash pens as backup drives for their data, which I consider to be rather foolhardy if that is their only backup of files that may have been deleted from their hard drive . They are generally reliable, just like hard drives, but unfortunately, like all hardware, they are not fail-proof .

Please do not rely on them for backups if you do not have copies of your files elsewhere .

HDD, CD, DVD, Flash, Tape drives none are fail safe.

624600 2007-12-26 07:54:00 Ive posted the same opinion about the reliability of USB drive backups.
I just got replies re how reliable USB flash drive backs have been......

No backup device is perfect, but that doesnt mean you should use one of the less reliable types.
I still are amazed how many people dont backup, or just backup to the hard drive. Even after paying $$$$ for data recovery, they still dont backup data.

624601 2007-12-26 08:28:00 More offten than not you can advice people time and time again - its not until some thing important is lost for good, Eg A complete drive failure, with no backups, that they sometimes finally listen . If data is important it should be backed up to more than 1 Location .

I have seen people back up to CD and leave it in the draw of the desk - while this is OK , if something happens the thats gone too . Keeping a copy of data out of the main location, say in the shed, neighbours house or other secure place, and regually checking backups usually covers most problems .

Hell My work PC is backed up automatically to two different Locations every night .

624602 2007-12-26 08:48:00 I go overkill on my back ups, have dvd trays loaded with stuff . Every 6 months Ill do a mass back up . For my music alone i schedule a monthly back up etc, I guess Im a paranoid type who has been ripped or burnt too many times from either trusting people or devices . :xmouth:

Never been a fan of pen drives etc only for immediate use .

624603 2007-12-27 03:11:00 I just bought a 500G external HD, firewire & usb. Very nice.
I choose this mainly for the convenience ( if it all goes bad & I loose everything its not a big deal)

Speaking of data security. How many clients do you see who use their PC for ALL their book-keeping/accounts/taxes/banking & let there kids play on
it at night. Bit like giving kids a few bank cheques to play with.

624605 2007-12-27 04:57:00 I had a problem on one computer that completely ruined flash drives. Also have had my drive put through the wash (a couple of times) and still worked OK. They are better than disks but as previously stated should only be one of several backup systems. Everyone learns to back up once they have lost important data. woc (13210)
