625988 2007-12-30 21:51:00 I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on a 2.4Gb dual core machine, with 2Gb of RAM and a 320Gb HDD

My problem is that several times a day my machine will spontaneously freeze for anything from 30 seconds to several minutes, sometimes the clock on the Vista sidebar also stops running (but not always). The freeze usually resolves itself, but very occasionally (If I'm in a hurry) I have needed to reboot. Sometimes Ctrl/alt/del will resolve the problem by taking me to the list of choices where I hit 'cancel' which invariably takes me back to normal running.

The computer is ten months old and reluctantly I'm thinking of doing a HDD reformat and reinstall - to see if that might bring a resolution. I would limit the re installation to programmes that I actually use!

In the meantime, any suggestions appreciated.

Also check if there is any HDD activity as there are many scheduled tasks that run when the PC is idle.

It will have something like "Application Hang" or other descriptions /errors, double click to expand an error and post back the full report. This will tell us exactly where the problem is.

Have experienced this myself, left the machine for some time, came back and computer had frozen, had to warm-reboot to restart, Vista wasn't running correctly when it came back (desktop clock not running, machine very slow, graphical glitches etc), had to turn it off to correct it; found Vista has big troubles with sleep/hibernate (which is enabled by default), turned it off in Power Options, been fine since.
Micro$oft reckon they'll fix it in SP1 :groan:
