625909 2007-12-30 11:51:00 Computer restarts halfway. (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz)

Can't start up windows XP (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz)

I had this problem.

Computer restarts on XP Login/Password screen (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz)

All 3 of these threads seem to have strikingly similar issues, Now when I couldn't get into my Auntie’s computer, at one stage I did manage to login and I did notice a little box, that appeared to be counting down or something,(not sure if it was) it only lasted for a half a sec, just seen a flash of it, then Computer rebooted.

It reminded me of the msblaster virus that caused the "Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly." error

However it didn't look the same or act the same, I thought If I could get another look at what the dialogue box was it would give me something to go on, but I never got that far again.

If I just left the computer it would just endlessly reboot, it would get to the login screen, 10 sec or so later, it would reboot.

I ended up backing up her docos etc and formatting it. Problem fixed, but I would have liked to have worked out what the problem was.

I had put her hdd in my computer and scanned it with everything I had, also deleted the contents of the system restore folder in case anything was hiding in their. No luck

Maybe these 3 threads are caused by the same problem. Or maybe it’s just coincidence.

So if it wasn't malware, then it was probably a windows problem, corrupt files, something.........

I always untick the Automatically Restart stupidity MS has on by default, because most times when it reboots its going to BSOD when you stop that.

Then it will give you an idea of the problem.

And maybe a repair install would have been the first drastic fix rather than a whole reinstall.

Still..................cleans out the clutter anyway.

625911 2007-12-30 21:32:00 Could also be one of MS's fully tested  patches causing problems, esp if an auto update had been done. wainuitech (129)
625912 2007-12-30 22:40:00 Possibly this?

VIRUS NAME : Reboot-R

Trojan Characteristics

This trojan shuts down the host machine upon execution and at subsequent Windows startup . It utilises a system tool that is only included with Windows XP (by default) . It is written in Visual Basic, and at the time of writing AVERT has received two samples from the field .

When run on the victim machine, the trojan uses a system tool (c:\windows\system32\shutdown . exe - hardcoded in the trojan) to shutdown the victim machine in 60 seconds . A fake comment is passed to the tool, spoofing a message shown in a message box with title "SYSTEM SHUTDOWN" .

The trojan also copies itself to the Windows Startup directory as 'rundll32 . exe' to run at subsequent system startup (causing a reboot loop):

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\rundll32 . exe

On non-XP machines, the trojan copies itself to the Windows Startup folder as above, but is rendered harmless due to shutdown . exe not being installed (by default) . A system error message is observed .

Symptoms

# above message box displayed at system startup
# machine shutting down after restart
