625316 2007-12-28 08:33:00 I've never used Vista. I'm using XP.

A LOT people who brought laptops with Vista on them, have reverted back to XP. And companies like Dell, started selling their laptops with Ubuntu Linux.

Thats what they thought of Vista.

Because its pretty much hopeless.

SP1 for Vista is due to be released sometime next year to fix the bugs and the slowness

And I think MS are in the process of making Version 7 of Windows.

I think Vista is going to die a slow death.

Vista looks good, but all its got is more eye candy than XP.

And it's ram hungry.

Most people called Windows Vista Win ME II. Its just as bad as Windows ME

625320 2007-12-28 09:36:00 and how long is that likely to be around?

According to the Microsoft Support Lifecycle webpage, Vista’s Mainstream Support Retired in 2012.

But I suspect that will be extend before then.

So I can guess Vista will be around for a while yet….

well yes thats what they say, but it really depends on if the comsumers will use it up untill then or if everyone will go back to xp... quite a few of the commputer companys lyk dell are going back to selling xp computers because no one wants vista... as speedie said, vista is going to die a very slow death :groan:

625322 2007-12-28 10:23:00 /me is sticking up for Vista.

I've been happily using Vista for almost a year now. Sure, the initial switch over wasn't painless but after a couple of weeks of ironing out the wrinkles and getting accustomed to it, I'd never think of rolling my notebook back to XP.

What it comes down to is specs and I have no problem with people buying low spec machines and wanting to go back to (what they know) XP. Just because a low-spec machine is brand new (and cheap to boot, what a deal!), it won't perform as you get what you pay for. I also get it when others setup's don't mince well with Vista (graphics card, printer, etc.) and decide then that Vista is just a ME II. Eugh.

When someone earlier said 2000 was crap, I was thinking exactly what speedy put down. "There's nothing wrong with 2000". I'd even go so far and say I was rolling along nicely on Win 98SE for a couple of years after XP was released (on my old 700MHz + 8GB HDD machine - shucks, my primary USB key is that big).

I was gonna say if you're not upgrading your system then you're best to stick with your current OS. But since you're getting a new box then it comes down to specs. If the machine has 2GB+ RAM, then it's probably coming with Vista Home Premium which should do you fine. If the machine you get is bundled with Vista Home Basic then that's a good indication to drop back to XP.

I disagree. I installed Premium on one of my PCs, it was more than sufficient - 2GB etc etc.

Its certainly not an improvement on XP.

I could rant on and on about the "features" I found incredibly annoying and about its little problems.

I'm sticking with XP on mine until such time as I really have no choice, whenever that is - and it sure has nothing to do with Microsoft "support". Who actually cares if MS supports it or not? I still see Win98 PCs all the time, working happily for their owners.

And possibly by the time Vista becomes a necessity, Vienna will be out anyway.
