626212	2007-12-31 23:43:00	It appears that, after just upgrading from two 400 DDR 256 ramsticks to three 400 DDR 512 ramsticks and adding a new removable 80gb drive and bay tray, that the power supply just died a catastophic death. I hvae pulled the 300W supply out - Input voltage exists and mains switch works fine. There is continuity across the 5amp fuse, and there are mixed dc voltages available at the motherboard connector. There is no voltage across the power supply to the fan and I haven't yet checked the fan itself but will do that with a 12v dc regulated power supply. Any clues as to what might be the real problem. I had left the case side off so plenty of air..... but may have been old - over 4 years of almost 24 hour operation. Do I need to be specific in my choice of replacement power supply? The motherboard is not a dual core, basic Athlon 2800+ chipset and Nvidia 5200 graphics, network card, two hard drives, dvd recorder, and a floppy drive. 626215	2008-01-01 01:21:00	Anything thats 400W+ should do, dont get Hyena ones tho. From what I've heard theyre rubbish. Altho depending on what this system is, hopefully the PSU thats in there now, is a standard one. So a replacement will fit	Speedy Gonzales (78)
626216	2008-01-01 02:49:00	I'd say it died of old age. It's probably a crap brand as well, the additions you put into it may have been the straw that broke the camel's back. As speedy suggested, replace it with a 400w+ PSU, and don't get a crap brand. :thumbs:	wratterus (105)
626217	2008-01-01 04:13:00	It most likey had low amps on the +12v. Get one thats 400+ but has decent amps. Anything over 18a. Enermax, Antec, Coolermaster are good brands. Of the 3 Coolermaster would be the cheapest.	pctek (84)

I had just finished reading the reviews in the PC World article about the ACBEL with LCD screen and the Thermaltakes. They rated them at 9.5 each out of ten. Damn, si is $250 too much or not enough? Iknow some are out there at $90 to $130 - but never thought $250 would be crap product. Cheers for the tip before I go to the shops......	ChrisW (13236)
626221	2008-01-01 11:57:00	As in many electrical things, high prices doesn't always translate to high quality and reliability. Coolermaster PSUs are good products, as are many Acbel and Thermaltake, although I'd prefer Acbel and Coolermaster first. The older Thermaltake PSUs are apparently lower-wattage PSUs branded to be higher wattage PSUs, but the Toughpower series are genuinely good. Although, Toughpowers are both expensive and an overkill for your system - look for 400W+ Coolermaster. I also think the common 430W Thermaltake should be good enough.	qazwsxokmijn (102)
