| 626107 | 2007-12-31 10:17:00 | Hi all - I'm a new forum member, and until this message, had been able to quietly fix all my previous PC problems with the use of PC World magazine and various online resources . This time I'm stumped . Hardware - Asus Z9200U Laptop - (very happy with this till now) fitted with factory supplied Hitachi Travelstar 80gb HDD and running XP Pro SP2 Basically the HDD unexpectedly failed in use . As the machine is out of warranty I decided to fix it myself . Have purchased a Western Digital 80gb HDD as a replacement . This has been partitioned and had two partitions formatted for FAT32 via a USB drive case connected to a healthy PC . I am unable to restart the laptop, either with the new HDD installed or as a USB Boot device . I can get into the BIOS - and the new HDD is recognised as a Boot device - but nothing happens after that . It goes through the initial bios activities then hangs . I have a Windows XP Pro disc that came with the Laptop - but no guarantees this'll do anything either . Could someone take the time and trouble to walk me through this challenge . - Many thanks |

I managed to install the factory issued recovery discs in the CD drive, the hard drive is installed and Windows XP seems to start to load, but almost immediately stops when I eject the CD as per the instructions on screen. I then get a blue screen with the following hideous text "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this is screen appears again, follow these steps. Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. Technical Information: *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7AFC640, 0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000) |

| 626110 | 2007-12-31 10:34:00 | I would check and make sure the virus option in the BIOS is disabled first. I would also have a read of this (support.microsoft.com) |

I would also have a read of this (support.microsoft.com) I'll check that too - I did notice that the CD Rom drive was labelled E: drive and that the partitioned HDD was originally labelled H I J and K - I chose the full recovery of XP with 2 partitions i.e. option 4 on initial start up, but I'll check the antivirus option is off - then check out your other suggestions. I know the jumper set up is fine on the new drive and that it is connected fine too. Back later |

| 626114 | 2007-12-31 18:02:00 | These recovery discs had all motherboard drivers in them? Or do you have a seperate drivers cd? Haven't really had a lot to do with recovery CD's but on an old computer I had (which had recovery CD's) I know that when I changed a CD-Drive, they no longer worked properly. This may be the case now (with your hardware change). You may want to find/borrow/loan a proper XP disc Depending on where you are, one of the members may be able to help in regards to this :) |

| 626115 | 2007-12-31 23:36:00 | Thanks for the tip about driver disc . I did get to install the drivers off the disc as per the recovery process - but didn't think I'd need an additional one for the new HDD as this is supposed to be XP ready device . I'll check that out too . How can I access the cmd prompt window if I can't access the hard drive? Any suggestions? Thanks so far |

| 626116 | 2008-01-01 00:41:00 | You could try booting off the recovery cd Go to install again, but press R for recovery Personally since this is a new install, I would look for a proper XP disc and re-install off that |
