626714 2008-01-18 07:31:00 Righto, Thanks for all the info people, The replacement parts for my PC arrived today, But thanks to Telescum its cheaper for me to buy a magazine that comes with a CD containing a copy of Linux then what it would sting me to download it.

Thats a bare arse fact, Anyone who reads that and still thinks Telecom aren't ripping us off is nuts.

Anyway.

The local servo only had PC World, which had a copy of Ubuntu, So, Thats what I went with.

Incidently they gave the game Dirt a 9.0, Granted most of the popular press world wide rated it highly as well, But thats the sort of crap that keeps them pumping out rubbish games year after year.

All the people buying them helps as well I supose.:stare:

626715 2008-01-18 09:18:00 So, I build her, I'm ready to fire her up and install Linux, Decide I may as well move into the comfort of the house, I go up the five concrete steps to my house, switch my grip in order to open the back door, Front of case comes off in my hand, PC drops to the ground with a freakin horrible crash, Then proceeds to slowly flip its way down to the very bottom of the steps with a freakin horrible crash on every step,...after what seemed to be an eternity she comes to a standstill, off in the distance a dog barks.

And I went ****ing arse. That sucks.

626719 2008-01-18 10:44:00 Nah, I got around the initial issue, Running off the Live CD at the moment, I did try and install it, went to heat up some Pizza, Came back and the PC was off.:D

Incidentally, The harddrive I'm using came out of my spares, shes a Dell branded Windows 98 install, Loaded with all the millions of popular spyware programs from 5 or 6 years ago, Gator, Precision Time, Kazzaa, 68 items in startup.....

EDIT

Dodgy Psu was the cause of the shutdown,I knew it was knackered when I bolted her in, Shes installing now as I edit this post,

626720 2008-01-18 12:50:00 Pretty freakin slick so far, I can see why the old guard look down their noses, Tired to play a single streaming AVI, she bougt up a dialog box, and thirty seconds later had installed just about everything I need to play back media.

Likewise for my video card driver.

Just like Windows, I'm doing things, with no idea whats going on under the hood.

Looked at installing WINE so I can use uTorrent, That looks a little more complicated so I'll leave that for now, Though I did install flash player with no issues.

Also on the list is my TV card, Think I may have a nosy at Media Portal.

626721 2008-01-18 21:12:00 Surprised no one has mentioned this yet http://en.ubuntumediacenter.org/
No download available yet - but might be worth keeping an eye on.

626722 2008-01-18 21:37:00 Righto, Is there anyway to configure the hardware?

At this stage I have no idea if my TV card has been recorgnised, is it a case of installing a TV app and seeing if it works? My audio chipset has a boatload of capabilities, are these all now lost? (granted they were mostly software features)

Also, according to my list of installed software, I have a torrent client, Damned if I can see a way to launch it, But, If I try and open a file with no associated program I get the torrent client in the list, so its installed:rolleyes:

(someone working for Ubuntu has spent a lot of time copying windows)

626723 2008-01-18 22:08:00 Can you give me a run-down of what you have & don't have, and what your setup is? I'll then see if I can find you a nice howto for setting up the TV card under Ubuntu as soon as I escape from this *%@^ing datacard! (This means Sunday/Monday sometime).

Regarding your TV card - which model is it? Some of them require runtime firmware before they'll work; this is usually pretty easy to add but is specific to the card.

Your audio chipset probably still has a boatload of capabilities, Linux audio support is pretty good these days. Which card is it, and which features were you wanting to use?

The torrent client will be in the launch menu somewhere. Probably in the 'Internet' section.
