www.michaelstevenstech.com
www.michaelstevenstech.com

But note this

you can use an OEM XP Pro or Home, "retail" XP Home or Pro full or upgrade version CD of the same version Home or Pro to perform a Repair Install. OEM Restore disks or hidden restore folders on the hard drive will not work for the Repair Install.

Looking up your machine specs I see your disks came as a OS disk, and a separate drivers disk, like wratterus said,
support.dell.com
so I think you'll probably be ok to use your xp disk as its likely to be only the OEM OS on it; then you'll need to install any other drivers from your motherboard driver disk, plus any additional ones for other hardware (soundcards, modems etc) you may have, then install a antivirus and download windows updates, SP2 etc, etc.
Then I'd do what Pctek suggested (make an image of your new (working) OS, a ' Restore' disk), so you wont need to go through this performance again.

I think all I have is the rego numbers etc on the case & the reinstall windows disk.
I think thats all you need :D

626192 2008-01-01 23:58:00 Sorry RobbyP I was typing as you replied.

Interesting question is....how would microsoft know who I am??

Its been a while since buying the original....I think all I have is the rego numbers etc on the case & the reinstall windows disk.

Microsoft don't need to know who you are, they just need your product key. It however must be a full version of XP, and not an XP 'restore' disk. If you install XP and it doesn't activate for you, give them a call, and tell them you have upgraded your hardware.

626194 2008-01-02 23:42:00 . . . I cant belive that so many people say the exact opposite on the issue . . . .

People answer according to their own experiences . Some have more experience than others .

I'm sure that some Dell restore disks will work on any hardware; I'm equally sure that some Dell restore disks (probably more recent ones) will work only on Dell computers; probably most of these will work only on the exact model they were supplied with . ;)

With matters such as this, the experimental method works wonders . Try it . It will work or it won't work .

As has been suggested, the drivers for the new motherboard are essential . This may be the cause of the slow running; you might get away with just installing the new drivers .

It sounds like that CD can be used with any computer as long as you have an OEM XP key, but Dell also put something extra into it so that it can install without a key on Dell PCs.

626197 2008-01-03 03:55:00 Do you know anybody with an ordinary XP CD (someone who bought a real computer built from high quality parts rather than a Dell/HP/Acer etc.) that you can borrow?

If not, I'm sure that there will be somebody on this forum close to you that can copy their CD for you.

626198 2008-01-03 09:29:00 OK people.

Windows has installed nicely on the new setup.....however it would not take my activation code & I have 30 days to get that from Microsoft.

So as long as I get that sorted you could say the dell CD just works.
