626174 2008-01-01 01:22:00 A Restore will put it back to how it was before you put in the program, as long as you restore back to before that time.

A full reinstall will wipe every thing from the drive and start from fresh. - Better option.

To do a full reinstall you will need A Vista DVD, the product code and download the drivers for the laptop.

What model Compaq Laptop is it, I have looked at that listing on Trademe, but with this being a dodgey sale, I wouldn't trust anything that was written there ????

What Did MS say regarding the COA ( license key) that you say is attached to the Back of the laptop ????

Looking at the Trademe Site. the comments
ummm im not too sure, it was my sisters and her husband upgraded it, got the extra ram, and put ultimate on it, they have just moved overseas, thats why im selling it, i would have to ask them. &
Does it come with the Vista Ultimate licence/cd key? the answer was YES - well, lets say its not right obviously, one question the answer is yes it does have a Ultimate key, next not sure ???

Any way can you please reply to the above two questions - The answer from MS in particular.

thanks wainuitech,

actually the laptop never came with any COA sticker on, i can see where it was, but it was torn off.

dad emailed the seller and he is still waiting for his reply...and the last time i rang MS i actually focused on how to activate windows but never asked about the COA sticker, at that stage i don't know it is illegal to sell a computer without the COA sticker if it has windows installed.

the model is Compaq Presario F500
s/n: CNF71517V8
p/n: GC188PA#ABG

if that make any sense to you.

and for Speedy's information:

I did scan the "timestopper" file before i install it, but only with AVG, but it is up to date, nothing showed up during the scan, and nothing happened during the installation either.

I did a fresh installation of the system yesterday, but i really can't remember whether i put on the "timestopper" again or not (and that is a dumb thing to do), I wanted to do a fresh install again but dad don't want me to do so (), the only thing i can tell is that i never encounter any blue screen of death since the last installation, and i had spybot and AVG up to date and they detected nothing, but obviously something is wrong:

when i close the lid of the laptop, which it suppose to go into sleep, the fan of the laptop goes crazyly fast.

when it is asleep, i can't wake it back up (tried pushing the power button, mouse etc) but the screen won't come to life no matter what i do, at the mean time the fan stays crazy.. :badpc:

under any conditions, if the screen shuts down (to conserve power or whatever reason makes it decide to turn itself off), it won't come back, unless i use brute force to power off the pc then turn it back on again.

what is the matter? what should i do?

thanks heaps in advance.

626176 2008-01-01 10:05:00 Not to sure how to go about this - but you have a VERY good case to contact Trademe - But I'm not to sure what they could do. Being a Business I wouldn't purchase any second hand Computers from trade me - many people do, and have no problems, but there are also a few "Rip Off" artists that will do anything to make a buck.

Going by what you say - and looking at the actual item from the Trademe number you gave -
In the Listing it is clearly stated it has a legal Ultimate COA ( license) yet its been removed, with a possible illegal Ultimate Vista installed.

The seller may try to sell it on another PC - and rip someone else off as well.

Yes it is meant to have a COA on it. I'd be very surprised if the seller will suddenly turn up with the Legal COA - its all the signs of a rip off. (sorry to say). It may have had an Illegal key installed, or may even be a older Trial Key - what ever way - its not good.

Note: yes all the numbers you mentioned do mean something, and thats important to keep.

Here's what I suggest - ( totally up to you of course) 1st contact Trademe- see if they will or can do anything.
If the seller wont do the right thing - call MS again, explain what has happened (don't worry you wont get into trouble) Ask them what can be done - Microsoft hate the pirates more than you think, MS will usually sort it out , may get shunted from department to department a few times. But with the serial numbers and other data you provided above, they usually will fix things some how. Don't mention the timestop incident either - bad idea.

The laptop will hopefully be OK hardware wise. The fan going nuts will be software driven, so a few setting changes once working right should cure that. But the OS needs to be sorted other wise it can lead to further problems

626177 2008-01-01 18:44:00 TRademe at most will disable the guys account and tell you to take it up with the Disputes Tribunal.
MS will be interested in getting the sellers contact details and then tell you to buy another copy of Windows.

This is why I always recommend people be very careful buying PCs of any type of TM, if you must, then pick it up, don't buy one that has to be mailed - that way you check all is well before ending up in a situation like this.

626178 2008-01-01 23:00:00 thanks guys.

Trademe actually disabled the seller's account 2 days after the auction closed.
and when dad emailed the seller he said that he don't care if we post bad feed back or not because he has his account disabled by TM.
the seller also mentioned that if dad want he will do a refund because someone else offered him a much higher prise for the laptop.
we are still waiting the sellers reply, but i think he won't reply any more.

to wainuitech:

thank you so much for your suggestion and i will discuss it seriously with my father--at the end of the day it is his laptop and i will see what he wants to do, he really don't want to get into any trouble, but as you say, he won't because he had done nothing wrong.

once again thank you so much.

any other recommendations will be most welcomed. cheers

and i believe this a good lesson for me and any other one who wants to by stuffs from trademe, there are good sellers and buyers, but there are doggy ones out there too.
