627953 2008-01-07 01:12:00 Hi Guys

How reliable should an ADSL broadband connection be ?

Sometimes when I go on to my browser or email it does not connect and I have to play round with my phone line,

It was very bad last year till I move my cable to a different phone jack - I have 5 in the house.

Sometimes my phone line is very crackly and I am sure that affects things. So I find that if i pick up my phone and dial out a few times it seem to clear the line and my broadband connects.

I have decided that I do not want to put up with this any more (new New years resolution)

So what I want to know is how reliable should an ADSL connection be. Should you be able to stay on 24/7 if you want to or should you expect the odd cut off ?

I will then decide whether to get an electrician in to check my house wiring or call Telecom to get them to check my line.

Regards

You stated that sometimes your phone line is very crackly which indicates your line is "noisy". Do you live in a rural area or a long distance from the exchange? Have you tried every other phone jack in the house?

627955 2008-01-07 01:54:00 Telecom do say that if you have more than 4 telephone jacks in the house then you need to get the "proper" filter installed by one of their techs. (Even if they are not all being used) CYaBro (73)

That is not correct.
You can have as many as phone jacks as you want, it is the number of phones connected to the jacks that is important. Having 5 phones should not be a problem.

Regarding the reliability Digby, are you sure you have all phones fitted with filters. Filters are also required on anything else connected to the phone line such as faxes and sky digital decoders.
If you have a monitored security system you will need a full install done by telecom where they run a dedicated line for ADSL and you don't have to use any filters on your phones in this situation.

Well from my experience it is correct.
We have 6 jacks here at home but only two are in use.
ADSL would only get a signal but could not connect at all until a tech came out and installed a filter on the incoming line and made one of the jacks into a broadband only jack.
I have also had a few clients with similar experiences.

627958 2008-01-07 08:14:00 I know everyones experience is different but for me drop outs are quite rare indeed (Slingshot, North Shore).

Sometimes certain oversees sites are slightly temperamental but overall my experience is great......

I just wish online TV was 100% reliable!!!!

Same here, its not often we get drop outs, as far as I am aware. ( I may have only noticed maybe only 1 – 2 in the last two – three months, while I am awake) (Xtra Go Large, South/East Auckland)

That’s normal for the internet :) ;)

627960 2008-01-07 12:56:00 I'm with Xtra (sigh) however my connection is quite reliable; I think I only get on average around 2 outages a month.

One problem I do have is whenever I get a phone call I sometimes lose the internet for around 5 seconds. This is especially annoying when I'm playing online and get kicked from the server. >_<

627961 2008-01-07 18:45:00 Thanks guys,

Just the sort of replies I was wanting.

It seems that ADSL broadband should be fairly reliable with just a few cut offs in a month being average.

So I will get a sparky in to redo my wiring.

This should not be happening if you have filters/splitter correctly installed.
