2008-01-06 22:46:00 | I have acquired a pc in a non-working order. It has a product key sticker on the top but no winxp cd. I tried to reinstall, using another cd, but it won't accept the key from the pc. What do I need to do? | wotz (335) | |
2008-01-06 22:53:00 | is it xp home or xp pro? a key for one won't work for the other. If it's XP home you tried installing, you'll need to get a XP Pro and try that

What do I need to do?If you've got product key/authentication sticker then I doubt it's anti forum rules to suggest you could try an, ummm, dodgy version to install - it'd still be legit. Lemme know if I can help. | Greg (193) | ||
2008-01-06 23:16:00 | The disk I used was an XP home upgrade, not OEM. Authenticity sticker says XP home. | wotz (335) | |
2008-01-06 23:48:00 | You will need to get an XP Home OEM disc to be able to use the license sticker. | CYaBro (73) | |
2008-01-06 23:57:00 | So you've clean-formatted and gone thru the install process as far as the key input request? And then it doesnt accept it? Did you try re-entering a few times to make sure you had typed in correctly? I've had that happen to me on a number of occasions :) If it's Home edition CD and Home edition Key it should be doing it. But there's that word "should" that often means "isn't" ! What you could do is try using your own key and see if it accepts that, if it does, and still wont accept the one of the pc, then you know it's the key thats the prob

2008-01-07 00:21:00 | BTW - Would using a retail version allow the key to be used? No you need an OEM version CD to be able to use the number on the COA sticker on the case. The upgrade and retail versions have the product number on the case/cover that the disc comes in.
