627658 2008-01-06 01:12:00 This is an unrelated follow on to my cousin giving me his laptop to have a look at. He gave me his broadband user to try putting into my modem to see if would connect which it did successfully. I assumed it wouldnt work because i thought the login was locked to the phone line it was specifically set up on. He told me he was on Ihug's 1gig plan and was capped to 64k which when i did bandwidth test proved this to be correct. Im also Ihug on one of their FS/FS plans. Would that mean all data downloaded while logged into his user goes specifically to his account still or would it go to my account because of the phone line. Had he been an xtra user, would i still have logged in successfully? So if i shift addresses and the previous tenant at that address had broadband then i can just connect and carry on as per normal? Everyone i knows who's moved has always had to wait like 10 working days to be connected and pay a discon/recon fee of something like $50.00but most people have broadband these days so find the wait a bit hard to understand. The tech has to make physical adjustments to the exchange in order for the broadband to connect but this cant be true everytime??

Your thoughts on the above please much appreciated!

Cheers

627659 2008-01-06 01:17:00 you've logged in on HIS account so the data used will be billed to him......it works with xtra too yes...... drcspy (146)
627660 2008-01-06 01:42:00 I think you're missing the biggest point here.

You BOTH have the same ISP..so it works..but with a different pair of ISPs, I should think it won't.

627661 2008-01-06 06:29:00 No, you can't just move and start using the line if broadband has been at the address previously. Most ISPs sell UBS which is tunnelled directly to the ISP so you need the ISP to order a connection from Telecom to set that tunnel up to go to the right place. :)

It also means in your example about your cousin if you're both on Ihug then you would be able to use either login on either line and the data would go against the login being used rather than the line. Xtra are different in that they sell WBS so the data cap is associated with the line so any data used will go against the line rather than the login.

As for if the tech needs to do something at the exchange every time, that is different for every connection. If someone moves and disconnects their line then usually Telecom will try to keep the port intact for that line as it means they don't have to send a tech out for the next person who wants DSL at that location.
