Very nice too Ga.I think the point is why use PDF when Word would do.

And the answer is,less likely to have been altered b4 arrival!.

627912 2008-01-10 00:03:00 Because PDF readers are smaller.

And what you can put in a doc you can put in a PDF file.

And you dont have to install something like Office or Openoffice to open it.

And if theres a lot of data, its easier to get to (by clicking on the menus/numbers in a PDF file).

Than it is to search for it in a Word doc

If you've ever downloaded something like a manual in PDF format, you'll may see the numbers / menu on the left, which make it easier, if you know what youre looking for.

627913 2008-01-10 05:49:00 Why?!? Word is horrible as a document-exchange format! Have a look at this page (www.goldmark.org) for some reasons why. The issues I have with using Word are

If someone uses the latest version, there's no guaranteee anyone else will be able to read it
Word keeps track of edits, meaning that some information you've deleted could actually be left in your document
Word documents can easily hold viruses

Using a PDF is a lot more user-friendly to everyone else who is receiving the document. (Note: I'm not saying don't use Word to compose the document -- although I believe there are better document-preparation packages out there -- just don't share it as a Word document.)

No,that said there is an alternative to PDF and Word was such an option.

Wasn't advocating its use.

627917 2008-01-10 07:17:00 The whole point is that Word is not an alternative for PDF in terms of document exchange. Period. Word is a proprietary format that may or may not be readable on the recipient's computer -- so using it to disseminate documents is not a terrbly good idea.

However, you can use any authoring program on your computer to create the document in the first place. And keeping your original document in its original format is essential if you ever want to easily edit it (although, again, there are valid arguments that Word is also to be avoided for this!). Just share it as a PDF.

627918 2008-01-10 09:06:00 Stuff PDFs. I just want the data not wheels and bistles. I agree with Terry Porrit from ages ago that this was just fancy trollop skins. We've now become supposedly isolated as old fashioned purists- "html ya ya"

What you want all these fancy graphics for/ Make you feel hot- or what?

Read "the clouds" by aristophanes ( ancient greek coot) good stuff.

627919 2008-01-10 09:19:00 Whats PDF files got to do with graphics, html or skins. Speedy Gonzales (78)
627920 2008-01-10 09:51:00 Hmmmm well speedy PDFs AFIAK are all about pages delivered to you with more than just plain old text, like with logos up on the side and fancy colours and that and I don't want that why not just have the raw data? To me it's the old MS stuff of the line of dancing bears under yr email I mean who wants that? OK I suppose some people must or at least MS supousess they do. That's my simple beef with Pdf. More unnecasssarey crap -may be wrong. Being a dial up person gives a sense of coding economy - and I lament that this sense of economy seems to have been abandoned in this new orgy of the new and wonderful and promising world of Broadband. (Where * sigh* economy of coding is still what matters.)
