627518 2008-01-05 22:51:00 Can't you just plug it into a XP or Vista machine and use Disk Management to do it? Right click My Computer -> Manage -> Disk Management.

I run W2K and don't have access to XP or Vista.

Have you ever seen one of these drives pctek? I've been a technician more or less all my working life (over 4 decades) and I can fix almost anything electronic or electrical and a bit more besides, but I wouldn't try to take this enclosure apart and expect warranty cover after the event. I have no doubt that I can get it apart, but it may not go back together quite so easily and I probably couldn't hide the evidence.

I'll try the software chill suggested, and late last night I chanced upon a free download for DiskDirectorSuite 9.0 as well so between those two I should be able to sort it.

I won't be able to work on it again for a week or two due to work pressures, but I'll come back to this thread once I have succeeded (or otherwise, as the case may be!)

Thanks to all for your advice and assistance.

Cheers

627520 2008-01-06 07:42:00 Quick update:

DiskDirectorSuite 9.0 doesn't do USB drives so that is out, and I took a look at gparted-livecd and couldn't understand a word of the instructions (sorry chill, linux is not my thing). I couldn't work out whether the download could be just run as-is or whether I needed to do all the stuff under live USB.

I need a load-run-use program, so it looks like I could be forced to go commercial unless there is a freeware program that I haven't discovered yet.

I've looked again, and I'm definitely NOT taking the disk out of its enclosure!

Cheers

Go to your local harvey normans with it, hook it up to the nearest mac and use the macs disk utility. Simple and costs nothing.

One does need nerves of steel to work on such expensive hardware,so,wait for Bond or myself to drop by.

One assumes you are talking of one of these......
