627240 2008-01-03 23:13:00 I have a 1GB SD flash memory card used in my digital still camera. It worked fine recording .jpg and .mov files, which could be recorded and read back in the camera and in the PC.

Suddenly it cannot be read:
in the Windows Explorer in the the PC the message is "the card is not formatted, do you want to format". The answer has to be NO;
and in the camera the message is "Unable to read card" even tho it was fine when the camera was turned off.

How can I recover the files recorded to to the card? If I can't do it at home, does anyone know of a recovery service which can read the card?

One matter which might be relavent or might not: the card was formatted in the PC some weeks ago, which I'd never done before but was advised that this was a good move to allow the whole 1GB to be accessed on the basis that EXIF information is left behind after an image file is deleted and takes up capacity; I don't know if this is true. However the card was working OK after the formatting, before this failure.

627241 2008-01-03 23:22:00 4) My card is no longer recognized by my camera/PDA/reader . Is something wrong with my card?
It is possible that the card has become defective . If formatting the card is unsuccessful please contact us for further assistance .

627242 2008-01-03 23:52:00 It would have been better to format the card with your camera rather than on the computer . Your card may be corrupted beyond repair but if you have access to a card reader you might like to try a card data recovery program .

627243 2008-01-04 00:04:00 Try this . . . it works for me and I prefer to read/copy/delete and everything else to my SDs this way .

Goto My Computer, Right Click and >>Manage .

Click on Disk Management and see if the SD card is there .

If so, right click on it (directly on it in the VOLUME column), and EXPLORE it .

You may have to drill down through a few folders/files to get to your data . . . but if it's there, you'll see it now . . . . if you are set to view as Thumbnails, that is .

627244 2008-01-04 00:06:00 I think his is like mine, it doesnt even show up or make a beep to say you have entered the card, no icon, name or nothing. rob_on_guitar (4196)
627245 2008-01-04 00:24:00 Usually it appears as a removable disk in my computer .

If youre using a card reader .

627247 2008-01-04 01:16:00 Thanks. I've read the stuff on the Edgetechcorp link you supplied and it is interesting. I'm afraid that the card has gone defective. I have others identical and they're OK for now. James Kirk (3742)
627248 2008-01-04 01:21:00 FoxyMX, Thanks I'll try Digital Image Recovery. James Kirk (3742)
627249 2008-01-04 01:24:00 SurferJoe46: Thanks also. I did as you suggested and the system found the card. I have a built-in card readrer in my PC. The information is :
Layout: Partition
Type: Basic
File System: nothing
Status: Healthy
Capacity: 953MB
so maybe there is hope with a file recovery program.
