627016 2008-01-03 09:35:00 On impulse today I bought a GeForce 8600 GT video card.

However after everything seemed to install well I got the following message.

The currently selected graphics display driver can not be used, it was written for a previous version of windows and is no longer compatiable with this version of windows.

The system has been started using the default VGA driver.

Please contact your manufacturer to get an upgraded driver, or select one of the Microsoft provided drivers.

Now I have checked Nvidias site & I have the most up to date drivers apparently. Also I have just reinstalled windows and I think Im on XP Service Pack 1 again. So the part about it being written for a previous version of windows must be rubbish....it already is a fairly early version.

In case it matters
8600 GT
AMD Dual Core
ASUS M2A-VM mobo

Any help would be appreciated.

627017 2008-01-03 09:47:00 Update to Service Pack 2. The driver may only support Service Pack 2 and will use that same message for all unsupported versions. Although, Nvidia's page doesn't say anything about Service Pack support.....

What version of ForceWare is it? 169.21? That's the latest available on nVidia's page.

I am unsure how to get SP2.......is it free on the net??

 Not a leech at all, hell its a HELP forum - and people help others that need it. Better to ask and get help than muck about for ages then it takes longer in the end.

To check if you even need to download SP2, right click on "my Computer" / Properties and there it will tell you what it currently has Example Here (www.imagef1.net.nz)

If you have a 32 bit system you get the 32 - ditto for 64. Being SP1 you may have chances, are reasonably good its 32-bit. The install CD should tell you what it is - written on it.

A 4 bit CPU? You mean 64 bit, and no, it's not related unless you have a 64-bit OS.

I presume you'll have 32-bit XP, so go for the 32 bit.

627025 2008-01-03 10:35:00 Well that SP2 has installed as has those new Nvidia drivers. But I get the same message about the graphics and there is still no output from the graphics card (I think it is installed OK).

Oh well I shall have to have a fresh crack at it tommorow.

I would like to get my first ever good graphics running, I am only a few days past having Intel Integrated Celeron graphics!!!
