628708 2008-01-09 07:44:00 Our PC is linked to a flat panel monitor. Suddenly today we are getting the message that the monitor is not receiving a signal. Have not been doing anything remotely out of the ordinary with the setup. Have checked the DVI/D connection and it is fine. The power is there okay because we get the message. Mrs Misty needs the PC desperately for a task tomorrow.

What else can we try please ?
Misty

628709 2008-01-09 07:45:00 You have another monitor handy to eliminate either the pc or monitor side of things? rob_on_guitar (4196)
628710 2008-01-09 08:06:00 If you don't have a spare monitor about to check that, turn off the PC and remove the graphic Card, give the slot a good blow out and reseat the Card, see if that makes any difference.

That message usually means its not getting the signal from the PC / Graphic Card.

628711 2008-01-09 08:31:00 Hi Wainuitech and Rob
I don't have a spare monitor to try (had actually thought of that).

Do have a laptop but don't think that will do instead.

I will try giving the slot a good blow out. Have found some instructions on the net
peripherals.about.com

however will need to buy an anti-static wrist strap first I see. Will do that.

In the meantime the urgency has dimmed slightly because I got hold of a backup of what Mrs Misty wants and even though it is dated 23 Dec Mrs Misty is happy. We have loaded the file onto the laptop.

Anyway, thanks for your help - must get off to bed as am up at 5am tomorrow.
cheers
Misty :)

628712 2008-01-09 08:53:00 You don't "have" to have a anti-static wrist strap.

You can put the PC on something like a table, better than on the floor, try to stay off carpet that can cause static.

With the side off the case, remove the retaining screw that holds in the Card, touch the metal part of the case with your hands for a couple of seconds, this will remove most static, look at the card where it plugs into the Slot, usually there will be some sort of retaining clip, open it, the lift the card out - (May be tight) - blow out any dust/dirt, replace card,it should "snap" back into place, make sure its seated correctly and put back in retaining screw.

Note: just be careful when hold the card, try to grip by its edges, make sure you don't damage any components on the card other wise it will be rubbish tin material.

Hi Wanuitech
am following instructions carefully. Have got the card out and giving it a good blow, just by blowing with my breath. Don't know if i should use anything stronger. Seems all to be going fine !

fingers crossed !

628714 2008-01-11 00:44:00 Unfortunately, thought the operation seemed to go successfully the monitor is still not going. Still I learnt a few things.

This evening I will take the monitor round to some friends, hook it up and see if it works on their PC.

Only thing you may need is a few drinks - that will make it stronger  - Only kidding.

Its the Slot the card goes into that needs to be blown out, you should be able to see if there's any build up of dust / dirt.
Blowing out like you did is usually fine, its just to blow out any dust build up.

What you can do is remove the Graphic Card, and start the PC, as long as the Motherboard doesn't have onboard graphics as well , you should hear a series of beeps, this will indicate the boards detecting it doesn't have a card ( which is a good sign). If the PC does have onboard Graphics as well, try plugging the LCD into them, see if you get a picture.

Hi Wainuitech
How do I know if the PC has onboard graphics ? I could use Everest to find out if I could see it !

The connection for it, will be at the back of the case.

It'll look similar to the card you're plugging the monitor into now.
