628466 2008-01-08 21:22:00 I've got an old My Documents backup which I want to recover some data from. But I don't want to overwrite my existing My Documents. So:

A) is it possible to read the file without restoring it?

Or

B) can it be restored to somewhere else so again it won't overwrite my existing My Docs?

The file is pretty large - nearly 1 gig. It's a Windows backup file - .bkf

Thanks.

628467 2008-01-08 21:35:00 I do not believe you will be able to read the file.

You will have the option to restore elsewhere.

Note that not all *.bkf files are equal in that the file format has changed over time. They are not always backward compatible.

628468 2008-01-08 21:59:00 Thx. This backup was made on WinXP Pro SP1, the same opsys I'm still using. If I can restore to another partition that'd be great, but I'm a bit nervous to try without knowing for sure. Greg (193)

Yep, if you use the “Restore Wizard”, make sure you click on the “Advanced” button before you click on the "Finish" button, & you will be able to tell it where to restore the files or file to.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks Stew - I'll risk it.

What’s wrong with Windows backup???

I have been using Windows backup for years now backing up my data & have had no problems with it at all. (I have also restored a bit of data from it as well, with no problems either)
