628404 2008-01-08 03:42:00 Hey guys,
I know I asked this before but it seems to me a lot has developed over the year, and needed to ask this question again :D.

I have a current old pc running xp with 128mb rdram (no chance of upgrade at all, cant buy new pc yet), 40gb hard drive cdrw etc...

...earlier on I had decided upon ubuntu, but the live cd was really slow, and ubuntu requires a minimum system requirement of 192mb ram...my 128mb is all I have and thus I have been looking into other less memory required ubunto based linux distros, i.e. Xubuntu and Fluxbuntu....what are people's experiences with these distros?

Cheers,
zahmad

628405 2008-01-08 04:00:00 Xubuntu should suit you nicely. Or Debian with any lightweight DE. Erayd (23)
628406 2008-01-08 07:58:00 I think the issue is that you need to be avoiding either of the two main GUIs (KDE and GNOME) due to limited RAM. johnd (85)
628407 2008-01-08 17:21:00 Try DSl (damn small linux)
The only problems you would have is the download iso 50 megs then burning the iso to cd rom

It is designed for low spec pcs (not trying to be cheeky)

it is a live cd with the option of HD install

628408 2008-01-09 08:08:00 I was wondering about how all the distros listed above should be at least faster than xp right? As I believe windows is slower by the fact of actually running an antivirus!....is this any true? zahmad (8963)

Depends on the PC's spec's and the Antivirus. I have Nod32 on all the machines and dont really notice a performance hit at all.

I have removable Drives on a workshop PC, several have XP while another drive has Ubuntu (installed - Not Live CD) and to tell you the truth they both start up and run about the same speed.

This may cause a stir :p If you have something like Norton's it usually will put the breaks on the OS.

628410 2008-01-09 08:12:00 well the one I listed (DSL) is optimised for speed/low spec machines
But it is also supported by the apps you mostly need

628411 2008-01-09 22:57:00 Yeah, add another vote for Xubuntu, it'll be a bit different but it'll work nice :) Chilling_Silence (9)
628412 2008-01-10 04:58:00 Thanks, will give xubuntu a try once i've freed up disk space (too many movies ;) ).....I was also looking at other distros and zenwalk came up....it looks great, but some have had bad experiences with it, some have had good....anyone tried zenwalk? zahmad (8963)
