628187 2008-01-07 08:16:00 I have Norton Antivirus installed in both of my computers and one has got a trojan in it - my computer tells me all is secure and I am safe but an online scan tells me i have no known antivirus or firewall - adaware says I have a trojan and it cannot be removed as it is an unsupported file. The PC shuts off and restarts when I try to do an online scan at the Symantec site and I cannot find any way to contact them to ask for help. I do not know how to proceed except to unplug the whole thing and send it away for help, and this is where I am at the moment  . Laraine Laraine Chezick (12228)
628188 2008-01-07 08:59:00 A lot of people on here don’t like Norton Antivirus, & I suspect a few will say to dump it (including me :p), but that’s not going to help you here.

What I suggest you do is completely disable Norton Antivirus and install AVG Antivirus http://free.grisoft.com/ & run it & scan your computer & see if its picks up this Trojan adaware says you have.

Let us know how you get on?

PS: Does adaware says where or what file format this Trojan is in??

628189 2008-01-07 09:30:00 And try trojan remover in my sig..

If you cant get to the site, here's the link (www.simplysup1.com)

Install it then click on scan, then select all options under utilities.

628190 2008-01-07 09:34:00 You will first need to get rid of Norton, but it does not have an uninstaller and if you do not get rid of all the bits then most likely any other AV will not function. Seems obvious to me that Nortons set it up this way, to ensure people keep paying for their crappy product when freebies do a better job.

You need the following:

Here is the link to the Norton Removal Tool
from the Symantec (Norton's) web site.

service1.symantec.com

The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products and Norton 360 from your computer. If you use ACT! or WinFAX, back up those databases before you proceed.

628191 2008-01-07 19:13:00 Just be careful running more than one anti-virus programs at the same time.

Oh: Some worms are so bad you can't kick them out and a deadload is required. The people that make these programs are sick. Are they trying to kill MS? Or they just in for the laughs? (I did not say this). Could it be a rival
or a anti worm software maker? Someone needs to find out. As soon as MS stops this, they will put their sights on other OS's. Yes Linix could be a target..

628192 2008-01-07 22:05:00 If you are up to it, take out the hard drive from the infected computer & put it in your clean computer so you can scan it without anything running. It can be very difficult to get rid of some trojans that are able to run in safe mode. Greven (91)
628193 2008-01-07 22:11:00 And disable system restore. Then you may have to delete everything in the SR folders. Speedy Gonzales (78)

but if you disable one of them, before running the other one, then it should be OK :)

628195 2008-01-07 22:46:00 Nope always- simply turn one off is not a good Idea, many Antivirus programs detect others as a bug and will then remove its components rendering it useless.

Use Nod32 30 Day Trial (www.eset.co.nz) - its far better than Norton and AVG. Not free, but works better.

The fact that the online scan is crashing means its infected and the bugs are killing the scanner.
Dowload Spybot, Spyware Doctor from my sig, as well as Super Antispyware (www.superantispyware.com/) & Ad-Aware (http:), Antispyware Usually works OK together, Antivirus software wont - only use 1. Also make sure you disable system restore as per Speedys post - other wise they may come back on reboot.
