628921 2008-01-09 22:06:00 This morning my PC wouldn't boot normally. It stalled on the boot screen after doing the mem test and displaying the physical drives.

The error message was: CMOS checksum error - Defaults loaded

At the bottom of the screen was the message: Press F1 (haha) to continue. I duly pressed F1 and Windows loaded as normal.

What gives?

That will do it

628924 2008-01-09 22:32:00 I occasionally have had these. Also I've had something along the lines of "CMOS reset because clock speed did not match". I've wondered if its caused by a power supply glitch at start-up or switch-off. Otherwise it hasn't caused any problems other than dual reboot. ledzep (1441)
628925 2008-01-09 23:44:00 Yeah I've done a bit of a search of the error message. Battery and PSU failing both come up a lot, but with inconsistent results.

Weirdly I noticed a couple of strange symptoms - my Windows clock had gone haywire, showing not only the incorrect time, but also the year. Then I also noticed my AVG was out of date despite updating it yesterday. It took me four update attempts to get it updated, after downloading nearly 10 megs overall.

So I'm currently running an anti-virus scan and it's about half-way through, having picked up one trojan (vpwodsr.exe.old) and one virus (obfustat.KUU)!

One forum I found had someone comment that they got this problem after running SpyBot S&D. Coincidently I updated my SpyBot yesterday. Hmmm.

(I'm currently connected via the laptop, not my main machine)

Also - I was gonna try Speedy's suggestion, but thought I'd just try reboot again to see if the same error occured - it didn't!

Anyways - I will get a new CMOS battery soon, as suggested, in case the problem re-occurs. Meanwhile I think the problem is down to the infections I somehow got.

628926 2008-01-09 23:53:00 Doubt it - the symptoms you describe indicate beyond reasonable doubt that your BIOS battery is flat, or very nearly flat, especially noting what your clock's been doing. Erayd (23)
628927 2008-01-09 23:53:00 Nah, definitely the battery! feersumendjinn (64)
628928 2008-01-10 00:07:00 Ah well - I'll get a new battery. But it's probably been a good experience cos I haven't done an anti-virus scan in yonks.

I just finished the scan and rebooted - all seems fine for now. But if you guys (Bletch, Feersum, Bevy) are right then possibly tomorrow the problem will re-occur. I'll let you know.

628929 2008-01-10 00:28:00 I just noticed this thread lol, definitley the battery. Chuck a new one in and all will be well. wratterus (105)
628930 2008-01-10 03:02:00 Are these really old batteries then? I see a lot of old PCs that don't have failing batteries.
As for the message I wouldn't worry about it unless it does it again. A few times.
Once...nah........
