629394 2008-01-11 22:56:00 Read the documentation for Crysis. Its optimised for SLI.

However I'd say it would prefer 2 8800GTs over 8600s.

629395 2008-01-11 23:38:00 So how many games will be out there soon that just wont run so hot on 8600GT??? Is it heaps, or are people getting the 8800GT unneccessarily?? I am still learning about graphics cards as I have had my first non integrated one in for about a week (thanks to help from the good people around here).

Some games scale well - some don't. HL2 is very scalable and should be quite playable on reasonably high settings with a 8600GT.

For recent games - Bioshock is quite a scalable game and should look pretty good.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare will be able to be made to run reasonably well - much better than Crysis anyway.

629396 2008-01-11 23:56:00 Most games are designed to run OK on all but the lowest of the current generation cards - they just turn off features & are less detailed the further down the scale you go.

There are some games that are all about the graphics, so aren't designed with lower end cards in mind. You just have to check out the demo or user reviews before you buy a game.

629397 2008-01-12 00:00:00 It is a worry that many of the new DX10 games will need a top of the line graphics card costing at least $500.00 to run well.
On medium, I still think the graphics for Crysis are quite ordinary, I was expecting an improvement from DX9 but really can't see one.

yeah you need to run crysis on full to get the full extent of its graphics.. but then you need a lot of hardware to do that

629398 2008-01-12 00:35:00 I run Crysis + DX10 patch on XP with High settings using a 8800GT and manage 25FPS. I also have a 8600GTS which manages 5FPS so even two 8600GTS would not beat the 8800GT. trinsic (6945)
629399 2008-01-13 02:12:00 OK, it appears that the Crysis demo runs in DX9 by default. To run it in DX10 you need to tell it to.
I'm running Vista so that means going into Start/Games/right-click on the Crysis demo icon/play DX10.

Probably due to my graphics card it will not run DX10 in full screen.

Needless to say I retract what I said about ordinary graphics. They are awsome in DX10!

629400 2008-01-13 02:23:00 To be honest I can't really tell much difference between Crysis in DX9 and 10 unless you're showing me two of the same pictures rendered in both DX9 and 10 side-by-side.

I tried playing Crysis in DX9 in high settings, and DX10 in high - sometimes I can't tell which is which.
