629138 2008-01-10 09:26:00 Awesome reply WanuiTech!
Thanks for those nice, clear instructions - will look at that tomorrow when I get the PC back. I really am tending to think that the constant restarting is an overheating/temperature issue so it seems logical that this is the root cause of that. Possibly not enough thermal tape on the heatsink bottom or maybe I damaged it when installing it so ain't working properly.
Will dab some thermal paste on it just to be sure -- from memory it only needs a thin layer of this applied?
How much does thermal paste cost do you know and I'm presuming that I should be able to get it from my local PC Patch shop.

You sound like a very knowledgeable and competent operator WainuiTech -- if I ever have any major PC work to do you'll definitely be the man for the job!

Paul

629139 2008-01-10 09:26:00 Is there a piece of tape on the bottom of the fan
I believe there is. When I installed my stock E6750 heatsink, I remember a thin layer of tape that protects the thermal paste at the bottom of the heatsink (at the copper core). Did yours have it?

629140 2008-01-10 09:30:00 I didn't look (at the bottom on the Intel heatsink/fan) as it wasn't mentioned in the CPU and/or motherboard manual instructions - I just fitted the heatsink/fan directly on.
If there is a piece of tape there protecting the thermal paste then that will quite probably explain why I'm having this problem!!

629141 2008-01-10 09:33:00 Quick way to tell if its over heating - start PC - Go into the BIOS, some place in the health / System (may be called differently in Asus) will be the CPU temp - if its climbing like mad after a few minutes thats usually a good indication of trouble.
Not guaranteed but it at least may save having to pull things apart.

Thermal paste is cheap - depending on what you get, does a few CPU's.

629142 2008-01-10 09:36:00 No tape that I have ever removed. Normally has a plastic cover but this is obvious and couldn't be installed with it on. If you remove the heatsink then you should remove the factory paste and add new paste. Thats what the Intel site says! berryb (99)
629143 2008-01-10 09:38:00 Yeah, I can't remember the manual saying anything about removing the tape from the heatsink either.

When you turn the PC on, go into BIOS and check the temperature of the CPU. I think E4500 runs at about 40-45 degrees idle, from what google results say.

629144 2008-01-10 09:42:00 Cheers for those excellent replies guys - I don't get the PC back till early tomorrow afternoon so will let you know then what I find. Will check CPU temp via the BIOS first and then look at pulling off the heatsink if that's (CPU temp) climbing up quickly. Chemical Ali (118)
629145 2008-01-10 17:37:00 I use Arctic Silver thermal compound. Do not apply too much.

Here for instructions:-

I can not be certain that this is the problem but it looks likely.

629146 2008-01-11 02:01:00 I've had the PC back for an hour now and have run several applications at once and (typically!) it hasn't missed a beat!
Looked at event viewer at the time(s) that my mate said it crashed yesterday and under 'application' (nothing showing in terms of a warning or error under 'System') there are the following entries:

629147 2008-01-11 02:36:00 After running the PC intensively for about 90 minutes it finally started crashing/restarting!
Have looked at event viewer and there are no error messages coming up -- did notice however that it seems to be "crashing" stratight after the ipod service entry which reads:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: iPod Service
Event Category: None
Event ID: 0
Date: 11/01/2008
Time: 3:31:26 p.m.

The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Service started.

This is the warning message that showed up about 5 minutes prior to it first restarting:
Event Type: Warning
