631361 2008-01-18 01:58:00 And not a good idea disabling services thru msconfig. Disable it in services. IF you know what you're doing and disabling.

I said not to disable M$ services, and it's just a temporary thing. It's a very quick and harmless way of narrowing down the problem.

631363 2008-01-18 03:55:00 I have viewed the event logs & yes there were some errors / warnings, but to be honest they speak jibberish to me.

I ran RegHealer & CCleaner: removed what they found - no change - the error still comes up.

turned off all start up programs - no change - still get the error.

Could the problem be with the restore CD's.
Would you recommend a reformat / reinstall using WinXP cd & install the drivers as needed?

631366 2008-01-20 02:15:00 The 2nd log looks like it has something to do with Windows / MSN Messenger, its out of date. As stated here (support.microsoft.com)

Update it.

The 4th log sounds like your clock or the date/time in the BIOS is wrong. Correct it. Change the server (dbl click on the clock in the taskbar / internet time.

Try this server: ntp.cs.mu.oz.au (type it in).

The first log, get this and install it (www.microsoft.com)

The 3rd log click on the bottom where it says:

631368 2008-01-20 03:24:00 That's it --- I am throwing in the towel.
I am going to reformat & reinstall from WinXp cd (not the restore cd)

Many thanks to all who have helped, especially Speedy Gonzales.

Fingers crossed a fresh install from a different source will give a happy laptop!
